Kolhapur offers several ways to explore: the Mahalaxmi Temple represents religious tradition, palaces and museums tell stories of history, and Rankala Lake and the wildlife sanctuaries offer walks and opportunities to observe nature. When planning your trip, you can first decide whether you want to focus on cultural sites, experiences by the water or excursions into nature.

Temples and History

The Mahalaxmi Temple, also known as the Ambabai Temple, is one of the revered Shakti Pithas in Kolhapur. It was built in the 7th century by the Chalukya ruler Karandev. Another religious site is the Jyotiba Temple: it stands at an altitude of 3,124 feet in the Panhala Hill Ranges and offers panoramic views across Kolhapur District. Its annual festival takes place on the full-moon nights of Chaitra and Vaishakha. Those interested in religious traditions can therefore find not only the temple itself but also a recurring festival to consider when planning their travel dates.

Panhala Fort also brings together architectural history and the history of the Maratha Empire. King Bhoja II had the fort built between 1178 and 1209 AD. Later, it played an important role in the Maratha Empire’s defence strategy and was the site of numerous battles. The fort is easily accessible by air, rail and road. These details make Panhala a destination in its own right for travellers interested in historic fortifications and their military significance.

At the New Palace, architecture and collections come together: the palace was built in 1877, and its clock tower is 85 feet high. The Shahaji Chhatrapati Museum is on the ground floor. Its exhibits include weapons, costumes, embroidery and jewellery. The Town Hall Museum offers a different perspective, displaying ancient artefacts and royal memorabilia in an Indo-Saracenic-style building. Bhavani Mandap once served as the royal palace for the Durbar of the Maharaja of Kolhapur and today offers insights into the city’s cultural history and heritage.

Water, Wildlife Sanctuaries and Museums

For a different kind of outing, consider Rankala Lake. A promenade invites visitors to take a stroll, and boat rides are also available. The same lake thus offers two different options: exercise along the shore and a ride on the water. If you would like to combine a quieter activity with something more active, you can plan for these two options separately.

The wildlife experiences described at the sanctuaries differ. The Radhanagari Wildlife Sanctuary is traversed by the Bhogavati, Dudhganga, Tulshi, Kallamma and Dirba rivers. Guided trekking tours and wildlife safaris are offered there. The Dajipur Wildlife Sanctuary lies on the border between Kolhapur and Sindhudurg districts. Its green trails offer opportunities to spot Indian bison (gaurs), sambar deer, wild boar, leopards, muntjacs, Indian giant squirrels and several bird species. This means guided tours and safaris at one sanctuary can be contrasted with wildlife-watching opportunities along the green trails at the other.

Those interested in culture will also find museums with different focuses. The Chandrakant Mandare Art Gallery Museum displays film stills, paintings and sculptures. The Siddhagiri Gramjivan Museum in Kaneri focuses on India’s rural customs, traditions and ways of life; visitors can also see village replicas and farming equipment there. These collections turn the focus not only to royal history, but also to art and rural life.

Choose Your Travel Focus

The Kolhapur Mahotsav is a cultural festival held in winter, featuring folk dances, music and art exhibitions. Together with the temples, museums, fort and natural areas, it adds to the range of travel themes available. When choosing a holiday rental, consider which experiences interest you most and plan your stay accordingly—for example, around cultural history and collections, or around walks, boat rides and wildlife watching.
