Dhule: Between Rivers, Forts and Temples
Accommodation in Dhule
Dhule district invites you to combine nature, historic buildings and vibrant culture. The Tapi, Panzara and Aner rivers shape Dhule district. The district lies between the Satpuda range and the Sahyadri mountains. In between are hill forts, temple sites and destinations by the water. When choosing your holiday rental, you can therefore first ask yourself which side of the region you want to shape your trip: active days at forts, nature experiences or cultural discoveries.
Rivers, a lake and seasonal waterfalls
Birdwatching is one of the possible nature experiences at Nakane Lake. The lake is a spot for observing migratory birds, including kingfishers, herons and egrets. Boating and fishing are also offered there. This means you can plan a trip to the lake around both wildlife and activities on the water.
Waterfalls, whose character is shaped by the season, are another focus. Laling-Kuran Waterfall is near Laling Fort and is seasonal. Alaladari Waterfalls are near the Amali area in Sakri Taluka; during the rainy season, they become a destination for day trips. They are considered suitable for picnics, nature photography and monsoon tourism. If you want to include waterfalls in your trip, there are different options: Laling offers a connection to a hill fort, while Alaladari is associated with the rainy season.
Indave also combines nature and culture: it is home to an ancient temple dedicated to the goddess Indai beside a lake, and the place is also associated with a nearby hot spring. At Nakane Lake, meanwhile, the focus is on birdlife as well as boating and fishing. These different points of interest can help you choose the places you would like to explore during your stay.
Hill forts and active exploration
Bhamer Fort is a Giridurg hill fort in Sakri Taluka and has 184 caves. It also offers opportunities for trekking. Laling Fort in Dhulia Taluka is an ancient, now-ruined hill fort where trekking and exploring are possible activities. Seasonal Laling-Kuran Waterfall is near the fort. If you are interested in forts, these destinations differ in their described features: Bhamer combines a hill fort with a large number of caves, while Laling is characterised by its ruined structure and the opportunity for trekking.
Other forts also tell different kinds of history. Thalner Fort was built in 1370 in a triangular shape. It is a riverside fort in the town of Thalner in Shirpur Taluka, on the banks of the Tapi. Songir Fort showcases medieval military architecture with distinctive gates and bastions. It is located on the Mumbai–Agra highway. Each of these structures has its own defining features: Thalner for its shape and riverside location, Songir for its gates and bastions.
Temples, traditions and culture
Cultural discoveries range from individual shrines to groups of temples. A series of temples in the Hemadpanthi and Bahamani styles has been preserved in Balasane. Methi is known for a group of temples from the time of the Yadava kings, including temples dedicated to Balaji and Bhavani. Bodgaon is home to several old temples, most of them on the banks of the Utavalinala; it also has a twelve-pillared samadhi known as Bara Khambi Mandir. Shirud is known for an ancient Hemadpanti shrine dedicated to the goddess Kalika, and Chikse for the Gangeshvar Temple. Ahilyapur has an old, large well built by Ahilyabai Holkar; Mudavad is known for the Kapileshwer shrine she built near the confluence of the Tapi and Panjhara.
The district’s culture also includes tribal culture and Ahirani, which is considered an important dialect of Marathi. Festival traditions include Bhongrya Bajar, Holi, Akshay Tritiya and Pola. In Dhule, the Rajwade Research Board library holds 25,000 texts; the V.S. Rajwade Museum houses artefacts related to Samarth Ramdas Swami. You can use this variety as a guide when choosing your holiday rental: focus on forts and trekking, water and nature, or temples and cultural sites. The town of Dhule is also part of getting to know the destination.
