Chakan offers a gateway to temple architecture and fort history. Historical points of interest include the Cakreśvara Temple, other temples and shrines, and Sangramdurg. The road connections can also be factored into your plans: Chakan is about 33 km from Pune on the Nashik–Pune Highway; NH-50, the Pune–Nashik Highway, runs through the town. When planning a trip to Chakan, you can consider cultural interests and route planning as separate aspects.

Temples and shrines in Chakan

The Cakreśvara Temple is a structure from the Maratha period and is significant to Chakan’s local history. A large Śivaliṅga stands in the centre of the Garbhagṛha. The temple also includes a wooden Sabhāmaṇḍapa and a Puṣkarṇī in front. Behind the temple is a sculpture of Yajñavarāha. These details draw attention to different parts of the complex: the Śivaliṅga inside, the wooden temple area and the sculpture behind the building.

The Tuḷajā-Bhavānī Temple is to the right of the Cakreśvara Temple. Its original section is carved into a large rock. The Zitrai Temple and the Someshwar shrine are also among the ancient structures significant to Chakan’s local history. The Khaṇḍobā shrine is another historic site; an inscription dates the construction of the Khaṇḍobā Temple to 1783. The sites therefore stand out for different features: the rock carving at the Tuḷajā-Bhavānī Temple, the features of the Cakreśvara Temple and the recorded year at the Khaṇḍobā Temple.

Sangramdurg and Chakan’s history

Sangramdurg is a land fort built to protect an ancient trade route and the Ghat plateau. Chakan Fort is considered strong from a defensive perspective. Its history can also be linked to a specific siege: in 1660, Śāīstā Khān besieged Sangramdurg Fort in Chakan. The fortifications and the siege offer two distinct insights into the fort’s history—the purpose of its construction and a later military event. Chakan’s history is also connected with the conflict between Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and the Mughal Empire.

One tradition tells a different story about the origin of the town’s name. According to legend, King Daśaratha’s chariot wheel became stuck in the ground at this spot while he was on his way to war in the time of the Rāmāyaṇa. The place is said to have been called “Chakrinagar”; the name is believed to have later evolved into “Chakan”. As a legend, this story connects the place with the Rāmāyaṇa, while the siege of Sangramdurg marks a specific episode in the fort’s history.

Chakan as a base for planning your trip

The temples and the fort’s history offer points of interest for travellers who are interested in the local past and different historic structures. The road connections provide another point of reference: as well as being about 33 km from Pune, Chakan is on the route of NH-50. When looking for a holiday rental in Chakan, you can consider whether the town itself, with its historical sites, will shape your itinerary or whether its location on the highway matters for your plans. These are different questions to consider about your stay: which aspects of the town’s history would you like to explore, and what role does Chakan play in your route?
