Indore combines distinctive buildings from the Holkar era with a distinct food culture and natural destinations in the district. Indore offers cultural attractions such as Rajwada, Lal Bagh Palace, temples and museums. After nightfall, Sarafa Bazaar becomes a food market with street stalls serving chaat, sweets and savoury snacks. When planning your trip, you’ll find several clearly distinct options if you want to give different weight to culture, cuisine or landscape.

Palaces, Temples and Collections

Rajwada is a historic palace in Indore, also known as Holkar Palace or Old Palace. The Holkars of the Maratha Empire built it around two centuries ago. Lal Bagh Palace offers a different architectural character: its design combines Renaissance, Palladian and Baroque elements, while its furnishings include Rococo and Neoclassical styles. The monumental gates are particularly striking. They are replicas of the gates of Buckingham Palace in London and are twice as large.

At Kanch Mandir, the “Glass Temple,” the decor defines the entire interior. The Jain temple is completely covered with glass panels and mosaics—from the floor to the pillars and walls to the ceiling. Construction began around 1903. Another historical connection is Khajrana Ganesh Temple: Rani Ahilyabai Holkar built it, and its foundation dates to 1735. Indore thus brings together very different religious and architectural experiences.

With its eight galleries, the Central Museum offers an overview of artefacts, sculptures, inscriptions and coins from various historical periods. It is accessible by road and public transport from central Indore. If you are planning a cultural stay in the city while looking for a holiday apartment, the museum can be a destination in its own right, while the palaces and temples cater to other interests.

Indore’s Traditions and Cuisine

Recurring traditions are also part of the cityscape: Rangpanchami has been celebrated continuously since the Holkar era. This includes a traditional Ger procession, which also dates back to that period. Anant Chaturdashi festivities include a community procession in which figures of deities are carried for immersion. Both customs give Indore a cultural dimension that goes beyond the architecture of individual buildings.

Poha is firmly rooted in Indore’s cuisine; Indori poha jalebi is a well-known breakfast combination. Another local speciality is bhutte ka kees, a street food that is especially popular during the rainy season. After nightfall, Sarafa Bazaar becomes a food market, with street stalls serving chaat, sweets and savoury snacks. When planning your trip, you can therefore make local cuisine a focus in its own right, alongside historic sightseeing.

Mountains, Water and Nature Destinations

Indore lies on the southern edge of the Malwa Plateau; the Saraswati and Khan rivers meet in the city centre. Two distinct mountain destinations lie in Mhow tehsil in Indore district: Patalpani Falls is about 300 feet high, while Janapav Kuti is a mountain rising to 881 metres. Janapav offers an uphill trekking experience.

Choral Dam lies at the backwater of the Narmada River, surrounded by lush trees and small hills. Clear water and the verdant setting make it a picnic destination; paddling and boat rides are also available there. If you are more interested in animals and birdlife, you could consider Ralamandal Wildlife Sanctuary. It is in Indore district and was designated a wildlife sanctuary in 1989.

Pitra Parvat is accessible by road and via Gommatgiri Marg. Together with the water and mountain destinations, it offers another perspective on your trip: you can focus on urban culture and local cuisine, or turn your attention to the landscape and nature. Indore has good rail, road and air connections. When choosing a holiday apartment, you can take your preferred focus into account early when considering your base for the trip, without combining city visits and nature destinations into a single itinerary.
