Thodupuzha combines the history of a city on a river with temple traditions and a surrounding area where water and forest offer different experiences. The city developed on the banks of the Thodupuzha River and is of historical significance. Nearby are the Thommankuthu Waterfalls and the Malankara Reservoir; traces of the Vadakkumkoor kings also tell of the region’s past. This gives you a choice of city history, culture, and nature when planning your trip.

River City and Historical Traces

The seat of the Vadakkumkoor kings was once in nearby Karikodu. Ruins of a fort associated with the time of the Vadakkumkoor kings can still be found there. The Ninnar Mosque is also near Karikodu. According to a traditional account, a Vadakkumkoor king is said to have built it for his soldiers. The mosque adds another story to the history of the former royal seat, one explicitly identified as a tradition.

Waterfalls, Forest, and Reservoir

The Thommankuthu Waterfalls comprise a series of twelve falls stretching over five kilometres. They are about 18 kilometres from Thodupuzha. Trekking, climbing, and nature walks are among the activities popular with visitors to the waterfalls. A forest hike to the falls is twelve kilometres long and moderately difficult. The trail passes caves, unusually shaped trees, and low-hanging branches. These details about length and difficulty help you distinguish this specific hike from the other activities mentioned when planning your excursions.

The Malankara Reservoir is seven kilometres from Thodupuzha, on the Thodupuzha River. The dam forms an artificial lake that extends for more than eleven kilometres. Boating and fishing are among the recreational activities at the reservoir. This presents two distinct nature-focused options: a series of waterfalls with a forest hike and activities such as climbing, and an expansive body of water where boating and fishing are mentioned.

Temples and Festivals

The temples also give the trip a cultural focus. Thiruvutsavam is associated with the Thachukuzhikkavu Annapoorneswari Temple on Vegetable Market Road in Thodupuzha. At the Uravappara Temple in Olamattom, Thodupuzha Municipality, Makara Mahotsavam is celebrated annually for three days in January or February, the month of Makaram. If you would like to include this festival in your travel plans, check the specific dates for your travel period.

Choose a Focus for Your Stay

When choosing a holiday rental in Thodupuzha, your preferred focus for the trip can help guide you: the river city and its history, temples and traditional stories, or excursions into nature. The distances also set the two destinations apart: the Malankara Reservoir is closer to Thodupuzha than the Thommankuthu Waterfalls. This lets you consider which experiences you want to shape your stay without treating the different destinations as if they were equally close. For cultural interests, you can choose between the annual Makara Mahotsavam and the connection between Thiruvutsavam and a temple in the city.
