Kozhikode: Temple Art, Coast and Green Retreats
Accommodation in Kozhikode
Kozhikode offers all kinds of reasons to explore: historic temple art, bustling streets, green habitats and glimpses of the sea. When choosing a holiday rental, you can consider which of these sides interests you most on your trip.
Temple Art, City History and Trade
The Tali Temple combines a striking structure with a long history. The present-day building was constructed in the 14th century. Its two-storey sanctuary is shaped like a chariot and follows the Kerala architectural style. Murals and granite sculptures depict stories from the Puranas. If you are interested in architecture, you will find specific details here that let you consider the building’s form and its imagery together.
The Revathi Pattathanam is associated with the Tali Temple. This annual seven-day cultural and intellectual event takes place in October or November. If you want to plan your travel dates around it, check the exact event dates.
S.M. Street also tells the story of Kozhikode’s trading history. It is known as Sweet Meat Street or Mittayitheruvu and is described as a 500-year-old trading hub in the city centre. At 2.1 kilometres long, it is an extensive stretch of street. Its shops offer traditional Kerala handicrafts such as coir products, wood carvings and brassware, as well as Kozhikodan halwa and banana chips. During festivals and special occasions, colourful decorations, cultural performances and community gatherings add to the scene. These are different impressions of the same street: everyday trade on the one hand, and festive activity on special occasions on the other.
Green Spaces and Experiences by the Water
Mananchira Square opened to the public in 1994. Its design includes lawns, trees and plants, an artificial stream, hills and sculptures, as well as an open-air theatre. In the wider destination of Kozhikode, the square is arranged around the artificial freshwater pond of Mananchira, which dates back to the 14th century. The site brings together the history of the pond and the square, which opened later.
Sarovaram Biopark offers a different natural setting. Its wetlands and mangroves provide habitats for various plants, including native and medicinal species. More than 60 bird species have been recorded there; this figure refers to recorded species, not to which birds may be seen at any given time. The park project is focused on wetland conservation through sustainable, environmentally friendly tourism initiatives. The biopark also includes an open-air amphitheatre for cultural events, performances and environmental education programmes, as well as programmes and workshops on conservation, biodiversity and sustainable living.
You can watch the sunset at Kozhikode Beach. On the north side of Calicut Beach, there is a marine aquarium with various fish species. Dolphin’s Point at Kozhikode Beach is a viewpoint where dolphins may be spotted—a possibility, not a guaranteed encounter. These coastal attractions offer distinctly different experiences: sunsets, marine life in an aquarium and the chance to see wild dolphins from a viewpoint.
Families may also have different interests to consider: Lions Park, next to the old lighthouse at Calicut Beach, is considered an attraction for young children. The Regional Science Centre planetarium uses a Zeiss projector for its shows and covers topics such as the universe, planets and galaxies; the hall has 250 seats. Together with the beach facilities and green spaces, these offer a range of themes for planning a trip, without requiring every family member to choose the same kind of outing.
More Experiences in the Wider Destination of Kozhikode
In the wider destination of Kozhikode, regional nature and craft attractions complement the city’s offerings. More than 60 different species of migratory birds live in the Kadalundi Bird Sanctuary, where boat tours and walks within the protected area are also possible. The mangrove forests of Kadalundi provide habitats for otters and jackals. This regional natural area differs from Sarovaram Biopark, whose recorded bird species and wetlands are a distinct focus.
Beypore is known for the centuries-old tradition of making Uru boats. Visitors can watch the boatbuilders at work and talk with the craftspeople. At Beypore Beach, a walkway built from stacked rocks also extends about one kilometre into the sea.
