In Manipal, different discoveries come together: at the planetarium, your gaze turns to the universe; at the museum, to the human body; and at Hasta Shilpa Kala Village, to historic domestic architecture. Mannapalla Lake is also nearby. This mix of exhibitions, heritage and landscape gives your trip more than one possible focus.

Planetarium and anatomy: two distinct perspectives

The lobby of the Dr. T. M. A. Pai Planetarium features exhibitions on the vastness of the universe and a cross-section of a telescope. The view of the cosmos and the insight into an instrument for observing the sky offer two different points of interest. Anyone interested in astronomy will find specific exhibition content here rather than just a general view of the starry sky.

The Manipal Museum of Anatomy and Pathology, in turn, offers two distinct perspectives on the human body. The anatomy section displays specimens of normal human body parts and organs, with each organ system presented as its own subject. The pathology section focuses on diseased body parts and organs, as well as an area on lifestyle-related diseases and their effects on the body. Anatomical structure and the consequences of disease are thus presented as clearly distinct topics.

Historic houses and collections at Hasta Shilpa Kala Village

Hasta Shilpa Kala Village in Manipal features 18 historic houses from Malnad, South Canara, North Canara and historic North Karnataka. The different regions of origin give the collection its variety. There are also traditional shrines from various parts of Karnataka and a collection of tribal art from Bastar-Chattisgarh. Houses, shrines and art each offer a different focus within the cultural experience.

In the wider destination of Udupi, Hasta Shilpa Kala Village is considered an unusual open-air museum featuring Indian heritage, artefacts and culture from a historic golden age. The 18 relocated historic houses have been restored to nearly 80 percent of their original condition. The village’s traditional shrines include the 13th-century Harihara Mandir. A rough estimate puts a museum visit at almost two hours. Depending on your interest in the historic houses and collections, your visit may be shorter or longer.

Nature nearby

Mannapalla Lake is located near the destination. In the middle of the lake is an artificial island with plants and birdlife. This offers a different focus from the exhibitions and historic collections: here, the landscape, its island, plants and birds take centre stage.

Udupi as a wider destination

Udupi itself also offers cultural points of interest. The Sri Krishna Temple is dedicated to Lord Krishna, is considered an ancient temple and is an important place for spirituality and culture. Madhvacharya founded it in the 13th century. The religious festival calendar includes the Pariyaya Festival, which marks the ceremonial handover of temple administration between the eight Ashta Mathas every two years.

The coast shows another side of the destination. Malpe Beach lies between Malpe Fishing Harbour and the mouth of the Udyavara River. Malpe Fishing Harbour is the departure point for hundreds of fishing boats that bring in fresh catches every day. At the Malpe Sea Walkway, sculptures, murals and sand art reflect Udupi’s maritime and spiritual heritage. The coastal landscape and fishing harbour thus complement the cultural impressions of the temple and festivals.

Food culture and leisure also form part of the wider destination: Masala Dosa originated in the city of Udupi. Manipal End Point has well-kept gardens and sports facilities, including cricket and football stadiums, and is suitable for quiet evenings, picnics or a relaxing walk in nature. The attractions range from tradition and regional cuisine to gardens and sports.

When choosing a holiday rental, it is worth first deciding what you want to focus on: the collections and historic houses in Manipal, or the temples, coast and leisure activities in the wider destination of Udupi. This lets you tailor your search to the experiences that matter most for your trip, without conflating the different places into a single destination profile.
