In Mysore District, impressive architecture, religious sites and nature experiences come together. In the city of Mysore, the Mysuru Palace tells the story of the kingdom; on Chamundi Hill, temples and a monumental Nandi shape the landscape. Museums, a historic market and the scenery around the Kabani Reservoir also offer a range of ideas for your trip. When choosing a holiday rental, it is therefore worth first considering whether your main interests are the cultural sites in Mysore or nature and excursions.

Palaces and Royal History

The historic Mysuru Palace, also known as Amba Vilas Palace, was built between 1897 and 1912 in the Indo-Saracenic style. The walled complex includes the Residential Museum. A different architectural style can be seen at Jaganmohan Palace: Mummadi Krishnaraja Wodeyar had it built in 1861 in the traditional Hindu architectural style. Its murals depict the royal history and the Mysore royal family's lineage. Carvings depicting the Dashavatara represent Vishnu's ten incarnations. If you are interested in architecture and royal heritage, you will find a range of themes here: Mysuru Palace represents Indo-Saracenic architecture, while Jaganmohan Palace showcases traditional Hindu architecture and artwork relating to the dynasty.

Museums, Markets and Local Traditions

The Railway Museum displays old steam locomotives; its exhibits also include the royal train carriage used by the kings and queens of Mysore. Children can take a short ride on a battery-powered miniature train on the museum grounds. The Regional Museum of Natural History focuses on a different subject, with galleries including “Biological Diversity” and “Life Through the Ages.” The Sand Sculpture Museum features around 150 sand sculptures on 16 themes, displayed across an area of 13,500 square feet. These different museum visits give families the chance to choose between railway history, natural history and sculpture, rather than focusing the day on just one subject.

Devaraja Market is considered one of Mysuru's best and oldest markets and dates back to the time of Chamaraja Wodeyar IX. Regional identity is also reflected in local traditions and products: silk is cultivated mainly in Mysuru District, Karnataka. The Mysuru Peta, a traditional indigenous head covering, was worn by the former kings of Mysuru. Mysuru Pak is a local speciality you can try in Mysuru. Mysuru Dasara is celebrated every year in October, making the festival a distinct cultural occasion alongside the stories of palaces and traditions told throughout the year.

Chamundi Hill and Nature Experiences

The Chamundeshwari Temple is located on Chamundi Hill at an elevation of around 3,489 feet above sea level. The hill is also home to temples dedicated to Narayana Swamy and Mahabaleswara. One striking feature is the colossal Nandi, which is 16 feet high at the front and 25 feet long. Mysuru Zoo is another major stop when visiting the city. It covers 250 acres; public access began as early as 1920. The zoo is open from 10:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and is closed on Tuesdays. When planning your stay, take this closing day into account when choosing your visit date.

Nature is also part of the district's character: the backwaters of the Kabani Reservoir are rich in wildlife. A short drive from Mysuru, Karanji Lake Nature Park offers walking trails, aviaries and opportunities for birdwatching. If you would like to make time for nature alongside the cultural sites, you can include these different landscape experiences in your trip. Mysuru also has a railway station with train connections to Bengaluru and Mangaluru.
