Accommodation in Dharwad
Dharwad brings together impressive temple architecture and classical music with leafy lakeside scenery and activities for a varied family day out. Whether you are interested in history, spiritual traditions, nature or interactive exhibitions, you can discover different sides of this destination.
Temples and history in Dharwad
The Chandramouleshwara Temple stands in Unkal, an architectural monument of the Chalukyas. It is considered an outstanding temple, around 900 years old. Four doors face the four cardinal directions, and inside are two large Shiva lingas. These distinctive architectural features make the temple especially interesting for travellers keen to explore the region’s architecture and religious traditions.
The Shri Amruteshwara Temple in Annigeri offers another important glimpse into the region’s temple history. It was built in 1050 AD in Dharwad district and is considered the first temple built of soapstone. Its design follows the Kalyani Chalukya style, and a roof supported by 76 pillars defines its architecture. The temple was also intended as a model for later, more elaborate buildings such as the Mahadeva Temple in Itagi. In Dharwad itself, the fort is a reminder of another era: rulers of the Maratha Empire had it built in the 18th century, and today it is considered an important historical landmark.
Kundgol also offers historical points of interest. The ancient temples of Shambulingeswara and Brahma are located there. The 11th-century Shri Shambhulingeshwara Temple is cited as evidence that Kundgol belonged to the heartland of the Western Chalukya Empire.
Music, crafts and regional specialities
Dharwad is known for its contribution to classical music, particularly Hindustani classical music. Kundgol is considered the birthplace of Hindustani musician Rambhau Kundgolkar, also known as Pandit Sawai Gandharva. Those interested in music history will find a personal connection here to the classical tradition for which Dharwad is widely known.
Another local art form is Dharwad Kasuti, an embroidery tradition practised by local artisans. Markets and shops in Dharwad and Haveri offer embroidered clothing and home accessories. This means you can include textile crafts in your exploration of the region, alongside its historic buildings. Local culinary specialities include Dharwad Peda, a sweet popular with locals and visitors alike.
Pilgrimage sites and spiritual traditions
Tamboor is an important pilgrimage centre for the Lingayat community. At its heart is the Basavanna Temple, dedicated to one of the most revered saints of the Lingayat faith. The Tamboor Jathre draws pilgrims from across Karnataka. The Tamboor Basavanna Temple is 11 km from Kalghatgi, at the edge of Devikoppa Forest. This makes it a destination in its own right for travellers wishing to explore religious traditions and pilgrimage sites.
Nearby, Tapovana is a meditation and yoga centre 5 km from the city of Dharwad, towards Haliyala Road. Kumara Swamiji founded it in 1965 as a spiritual retreat for seekers. Its origins and focus on meditation and yoga give this place a different emphasis from the historic temples and urban sights.
Green outings and discoveries with children
At Unkal Lake, lush greenery and waterside activities provide a contrast to the historic buildings. Visitors can go for a walk, take a boat ride or have a picnic. Sadhankeri Park also has a lake where visitors can go boating. For children, the park offers rides such as seesaws, carousels, slides and swings. If you are looking for a more peaceful time by the water, consider Unkal Lake; if you would like to include rides, Sadhankeri Park offers more options.
For curious families, the Regional Science Centre offers interactive exhibitions, planetarium shows and educational programmes. Nrupatunga Betta, meanwhile, is a hill with paved paths leading from its base to the summit. These options cater to different interests: science to explore, hillside paths and activities by the lakes. Which one suits your stay depends on whether you would prefer to spend the day at exhibitions, getting active outdoors or relaxing by the water.
