Surat: History, Nature and Discovery
Surat offers a variety of themes for your trip: historic buildings and collections, hands-on science, nature destinations along the Tapi, and festivals with their own dance traditions. You can therefore focus your holiday rental search on whether you would most like to explore the city’s history or plan nature and science experiences. A nearby destination, Dumas Beach, adds a beach and local food to the options.
Traces of the City’s History
Surat’s Historic Fort was restored under the direction of the Surat Municipal Corporation after the Government of Gujarat ordered this in 2015. On 29 September 2022, the fort was inaugurated virtually by the Prime Minister of India. The Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Museum collection is housed in the Historic Fort. Established in 1890, the museum preserves evidence of former occupations, industries and crafts, as well as memories of historical figures. Historic costumes and clothing are also among the collection’s themes.
Another historic monument in the city is Surat Castle. The Sultanate of Gujarat had it built to protect against the Portuguese. The Dutch Cemetery offers another kind of historical connection with Surat: it is one of the city’s cemeteries designated as a protected monument. For a history-focused trip, these sites offer different points of interest—from a fortress and a museum to a protected cemetery.
Science to See and Try
The Science Centre is located on City Light Road in City Light Town, Surat. Its themed galleries are devoted to science and technology. At the planetarium, students and the general public can watch a full-dome projection of planets, the moon, stars and nebulae. KHOJ – Science + Art + Innovation Museum encourages interactive exploration: visitors can discover various exhibitions and concepts, take part and learn through play. A workshop space also gives students and the community room to learn and experiment. Surat thus offers both the opportunity to observe scientific topics and to participate in practical activities.
Nature Destinations and Special Experiences
Sarthana Nature Park covers 81 acres; the Tapi River lies to its north. Animal exhibits in recreated habitats and educational programmes raise visitors’ awareness of wildlife conservation. The park is easily accessible by rail and road. Sneh Rashmi Botanical Garden is also located on the banks of the Tapi in Surat. Described as a garden with more than 1,000 plant species, it offers a toy train and attractions such as Columbus, Injector, Free Fall Jump, Rocket Space and Crazy Jump; a hot-air balloon ride is also available.
Jagadish Chandra Bose Aquarium is an underwater aquarium and is considered the first of its kind in India. It is home to more than 100 fish species. Visitors wishing to explore different aspects of nature in the city will find an aquarium with numerous fish species here, and animal exhibits related to wildlife conservation at Sarthana Nature Park—different ways to discover the animal kingdom.
Festivals and a Nearby Beach Destination
Navratri is considered Surat’s most important festival, featuring Dandiya Raas and Garba performances. Uttarayan, the kite-flying festival, is also celebrated in Surat with great festivity and enthusiasm. Both festivals give the city a cultural side that differs from its historic collections and science offerings.
Dumas Beach is nearby, 21 km southwest of Surat. The beach has black sand and is popular with locals as a weekend picnic destination. Visitors can eat traditional dishes there, such as Pav Bhaji, Bhajiya and Gathiya.
