Porbandar: Gandhi heritage, birdlife and coast

Porbandar combines memorial sites associated with Mahatma Gandhi with a bird sanctuary, beaches and destinations across the district. This makes the town appealing for trips where culture and nature both play a part. When looking for a holiday apartment, consider whether you mainly want to explore the town itself or also include places beyond the urban area.

Gandhi’s birthplace and temples in the town centre

The Gandhi family’s ancestral home, where Mahatma Gandhi was born on 2 October 1869, is directly next to Kirti Mandir. The memorial shrine was built in memory of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi and Kasturba Gandhi. A photo exhibition about Gandhi’s life is displayed along the sides of its spacious courtyard. The birthplace, memorial and biographical images stand side by side at this site.

Sudama Temple is also located in the centre of Porbandar. It is dedicated to Sudama, Lord Krishna’s childhood friend. The temple was built in the town centre between 1902 and 1907. Those interested in religious architecture and the stories associated with it will find another cultural highlight in the town.

Birdwatching and varied landscapes

Porbandar Bird Sanctuary is a 1-square-kilometre nature reserve within the town. It was established in 1988 to protect numerous bird species. As winter approaches, the sanctuary welcomes millions of migratory birds. Visitors can watch waterbirds such as flamingos, pelicans, grebes and ducks at the freshwater lake. This offers a very different focus from a stay centred mainly on Gandhi memorial sites and temples.

The Barda Hills offer a different kind of nature experience, with trekking trails through varied terrain. Barda Hills Wildlife Sanctuary was designated a protected area in February 1979 and covers 192.31 square kilometres of forest. It lies about 15 kilometres from the coast of Porbandar city, in Porbandar district. The trails in the Barda Hills and the designated forest sanctuary are distinct aspects of the landscape.

Jambuvan Cave is in Ranavav taluka of Porbandar district, near the Suarashtra Cement Factory and about 15 kilometres from Porbandar. When water drips from the ceiling, a Shiv Ling made of sand forms there; natural rock formations can also be seen. Outside the cave are a Lord Shiva temple and the samadhi of Guru Ramdasji. This location is useful when choosing where to travel if you would like to include a destination in the district as well as attractions in the town.

Beaches and traditions in the district

Chowpatty Beach is within walking distance of Porbandar’s urban area. From there, you can see boats and ships on the sea; at night, the seaport is also visible. Madhavpur Beach is a sandy beach on Gujarat’s Arabian Sea coast, with coconut palms lining its shore. The road network connects Madhavpur Beach with Porbandar, Somnath and Rajkot.

The Madhavpur Fair is celebrated annually in the village of Madhavpur in Porbandar district. It showcases crafts and food from Northeast and West India. The festival draws on the traditional story of the wedding of Lord Krishna and Rukmini, which, according to tradition, is said to have taken place in Madhavpur. The beach landscape and festival tradition therefore offer distinct themes for travel planning, alongside Porbandar’s urban attractions.

Getting there and choosing a base

Porbandar is connected by several modes of transport. Porbandar Airport is a public airport in Porbandar, Gujarat. The city is on the Indian Railways’ Western Railway network and is served daily by express and local trains. State Transport Corporation buses connect Porbandar with major cities and towns in Gujarat and in other Indian states. When looking for a holiday apartment, you can therefore start by choosing your preferred travel focus: the town’s history, birdwatching and Chowpatty Beach, or destinations in the district and the coastal landscape around Madhavpur.

Other destinations nearby include the Harshiddhi Mata Temple, also called Harshal Mata Temple, in Miani, about 30 kilometres from Porbandar on the route to Dwarka. Shri Hari Mandir in Sandipani is 5 kilometres from Porbandar, opposite the airport. Both places add to the cultural attractions you can consider when planning your trip.
