Gandhinagar: Water Show, River and Festival Culture
Accommodation in Gandhinagar
Gandhinagar brings together very different travel experiences: a narrated water show with light and sound, religious culture, picnics by the Sabarmati and a sprawling park with skeletons of marine mammals. To plan your stay, you can first consider whether performances, natural history or festival traditions should take centre stage. These priorities can help you organise your days and find a holiday rental to suit your travel plans.
Performance and Culture at Akshardham
At Swaminarayan Akshardham, the Sat-Chit-Anand water show lasts 45 minutes. It tells a story from the Kathopanishad and uses a water screen, lasers, projections, fire effects, fountains and surround sound. Light, sound and storytelling come together in a performance. The 45-minute duration gives this activity a clear time frame.
The complex also includes exhibitions and the Abhishek Mandapam. There, devotees take part in a ritual with sacred offerings. In Nilkanth Vatika, there is a bronze statue of Neelkanth Varni. The Akshardham complex thus brings together different cultural themes: exhibitions, religious practice and a named work of art alongside the performance. If you are travelling with children, the water effects, story and ritual can each provide a different topic for conversation.
The Dandi Kutir Museum in Gandhinagar was open to the public from January 2015.
Picnics and Natural History by the Sabarmati
Sarita Udyan is a picnic spot on the Sabarmati. Indroda Dinosaur and Fossil Park is also on this river: it covers about 400 hectares on both banks of the Sabarmati in Gandhinagar. It displays large skeletons of marine mammals, including a blue whale. Picnics and the park’s exhibits therefore offer two different ways to spend time by the river. The park has camping facilities; check whether they are available for your dates before travelling.
Navratri and Uttarayan: Two Times to Visit
During Navratri, which takes place in September and October, Garba and Dandiya Raas performances are held in Gandhinagar, including at the Gandhinagar Cultural Forum Ground. If you want to plan your trip around the festival, check the dates for your travel year.
Uttarayan takes place on 14 January: kites fill the skies above Gandhinagar from morning until evening. These offer two different options for your travel dates: Navratri in September and October, or Uttarayan on 14 January.
Choose a Holiday Rental to Suit Your Travel Plans
For families, the different attractions offer plenty to talk about: a water screen and fire effects, a blue whale skeleton and kites in the sky are all images you can discuss as you explore. If you are travelling with children, choose activities based on your family’s interests rather than giving every theme equal weight. If Navratri or Uttarayan is the reason for your trip, your travel dates will help with planning. If you do not have a festival date in mind, the attractions themselves can determine the focus of your trip. This way, your search for a holiday rental in Gandhinagar starts with the travel plans you actually want to follow.
