Daman brings together black-sand shores, Portuguese fortifications and religious traditions observed on set dates throughout the year. The shoreline also varies: at Devka Beach, black sand meets a rocky, muddy shore; Jampore Beach has soft black sand and extensive shade beneath Casuarina groves. When planning your trip, you can consider whether you are most interested in coastal scenery, architecture or special dates.

Coast, Promenade and Activities

Devka Beach is in Nani Daman. Jampore offers a different kind of beach: Casuarina groves provide extensive shade for beachgoers. Visitors to Jampore Beach can collect shells and take part in water sports; specific activities may vary. The beaches differ in their shoreline features.

The Devka Promenade and Sea Front, also known as Namo Path, is a 5.45-kilometre route for tourists. Its amenities include more than 200 benches, smart lighting, gardens and snack stalls. Public amenities such as these can change over time. The length gives you a concrete point of reference if you want to include the promenade as a destination in its own right.

Views at Nani Daman Jetty

From Jetty Garden at Nani Daman Jetty, visitors can see the estuary where the Daman Ganga flows into the Arabian Sea, two forts built by the Portuguese in the 16th century, two lighthouses and three bridges. The garden also has a playground. The Nani Daman Jetty area also includes a dock, the river estuary and Saint Jerome Fort. There are several fast-food stalls in the Nani Daman Jetty area; individual stalls may change.

The Mirasol Lake Garden, also known as Kadaiya Lake Garden, is associated with pedal-boat rides and rides on a toy train. If either ride is important to your plans, check in advance whether it is currently available. Bungee jumping and water-balloon rafting are among the activities and rides at Devka Amusement Park; the specific offerings may change.

Forts, Building History and Traditions

Construction of Moti Daman Fort began in 1559 and was completed in 1581, when Daman was a Portuguese enclave. The fort covers about 30,000 square metres. Inside are cannons with intricate carvings. The façade of the Fort of St. Jerome is adorned with Portuguese-carved crosses, other carvings and inscriptions. The fort also contains a cemetery and a church.

The Dominican Monastery can also be explored through its architecture and recurring events. Visitors can view arches and walls that withstood the earthquake. Every year on 2 February, the Catholic community gathers at the monastery to hear clergy recount its history. On the third Sunday in December, Catholics celebrate a Mass there in memory of Saint Dominic and those who died in the earthquake. The Masi Fair at Somnath Mahadev Temple is another annual celebration.

Experiences to Help You Choose a Holiday Apartment

When choosing a holiday apartment in Daman, you can start by deciding which experiences will shape your trip: varied coastal scenery, views and architecture, or religious celebrations held on set dates each year. If you are comparing beaches, consider Devka’s rocky, muddy shoreline alongside Jampore’s soft black sand and the shade of its Casuarina groves. If you are particularly interested in the Masi Fair or the celebrations at the Dominican Monastery, their recurring dates may be important when planning your trip.
