Zunyi brings together the history of the 1935 conference and views of the cityscape. The museum and memorial complex focus on historic sites, while Phoenix Tower offers a viewpoint. The surrounding ridges and their visible traces also shape the different themes you can weigh up for your trip.

Conference History in the Old Town

The Zunyi Conference Museum is located in the old town, at 96 Ziyin Street. Held in January 1935, the conference was a life-changing turning point in the history of the Communist Party of China. At an extremely critical juncture, it saved the Party, the Red Army and the Chinese Revolution from collapse.

The memorial complex includes the conference venue, the former headquarters of the Red Army’s Political Department during the conference, the former residences of Mao Zedong, Zhang Wentian and Wang Jiaxiang, and the Zunyi Conference Exhibition Hall. The complex therefore brings together the event itself, other related sites and the exhibition.

Digital Experiences at the Museum

A 2025 official tourism article describes VR films about revolutionary stories and AR exploration games at the museum. It also mentions a digital interactive exhibition system where visitors can touch models of cultural relics, view them from all angles and examine their details. A more recent institutional report lists 3D imaging, multimedia semi-panoramic images and electronic touchscreen books, which are intended to make the exhibitions more interactive and immersive. The range extends from films and exploration games to closer examination of digital objects. As digital offerings may change, check current information about the exhibition programme before your trip.

Mountain Views and Traces in the Terrain

The core area of Phoenix Mountain National Forest Park is in Honghuagang District. In the park, Phoenix Tower offers a viewpoint overlooking Zunyi’s cityscape. As conditions at the site may change, check before your visit.

A three-kilometre mountain ridge trail runs from the foot of Honghuagang via Laoyashan to Biyun Peak. Trenches, communication trenches and man-made shelters of varying depths are still visible on the ridges at Honghuagang and Laoyashan. These features give the mountain ridges a historical dimension in addition to their scenic appeal.

Remembrance at the Martyrs’ Cemetery

The remains of 77 martyrs recovered from sites of the Battle of Zunyi were gradually interred at the Zunyi Red Army Martyrs’ Cemetery. In 2021, the cemetery was designated a “National Demonstration Site for Patriotic Education.” A 2022 report describes a school field trip with on-site lessons, during which participants climb 316 steps to the memorial.

Choose a Focus for Your Trip

If you’re travelling with family, choosing a shared interest can help you narrow down your search for a holiday rental: should conference history, digital museum experiences, or views of the city and mountain ridges shape your stay? The museum in the old town and the viewpoint in the National Forest Park offer different themes. Weigh up these interests before choosing accommodation in Zunyi.
