Turpan brings together historic sites in the city and destinations nearby. From the New Town cultural district, Turpan Museum, and Grand Bazaar to landscapes and buildings outside the city, there are different focuses for your trip. When looking for a holiday rental, it helps to first consider whether you mainly want to explore city history and culture or also plan to visit destinations in the surrounding area.

City History and Cultural Sites

The historic New Town cultural district is regarded as a testament to cultural diversity and the coexistence of several ethnic groups. A city report dated March 22, 2026, describes it as the region’s only historic urban area whose traditions had remained alive up to that point; restoration work was underway there at the time of publication. The district’s urban history and cultural coexistence make it a distinctive focus for travelers interested in the history of the city.

Turpan Museum is located at 1268 Munar Street in Gaochang District. Nearby, the Karez Museum explores the karez system: images, dynamic models, and exhibits illustrate its structure, distribution, functions, and historical development, as well as research findings about it. The different forms of presentation make this a cultural topic distinct from New Town’s urban history. As you plan, you can choose between a historic urban area and an exhibition that explores a particular system from several perspectives.

Turpan Grand Bazaar adds arts and crafts to these themes. It opened on July 20, 2025, as a municipal cultural and tourism project and provides a platform for showcasing Hetian jade, decorative stones, and rootwood art. This brings a focus on different materials and forms of craftsmanship alongside urban history and museum exhibits. Those wishing to compare cultural sites will find a different emphasis here than at the historic cultural district or the Karez Museum.

Architecture and Landscape Nearby

The Su-Gong Pagoda, also known as the Emin Minaret, is located in Munar Village, 2 km east of Turpan, and was built in 1777. It is 37 meters high and has 72 steps leading to the top along a central spiral brick column. Its height, number of steps, and column together describe a specific architectural form. According to the official heritage description, the pagoda is the largest surviving historic tower in Xinjiang and the only tower in an Islamic style among China’s 100 famous towers. The pagoda can therefore be viewed both through its architectural details and through this comparative classification.

The Grape Valley scenic area near Turpan is a gorge in the Flame Mountain area and is classified as a national 5A-level scenic area. The Buiyuluk River flows through the gorge; its main source of water is snowmelt from the high mountains. The combination of gorge, river, and water source gives the landscape a character distinct from the pagoda’s architecture. The Karez Amusement Park is also nearby: it is in the second village of Yar Township, about 5 km from Turpan city and 1 km from National Highway 312. The two distances refer to different points of reference and help clarify the site’s location.

When looking for a holiday rental, you can start by distinguishing between cultural sites in the city and destinations nearby. If you mainly want to include New Town, the museum, and the bazaar in your plans, urban history and culture will be the focus. The pagoda, Karez Museum, Karez Amusement Park, and Grape Valley add other topics near Turpan. This way, your choice of accommodation can reflect the places and interests that will shape your trip.
