Karamay offers an unusually tangible perspective on oil history: a single well, an exact date and a scenic area dedicated specifically to it form the central thread. Alongside these are different perspectives on the surroundings: the location of Century Park on the Karamay River and a fitness trail in the Ecological Recreation and Fitness Park. This contrast makes for an appealing travel plan: you can take an interest in cultural and historical context or focus on the landscape and physical activity.

Oil History at Karamay No. 1 Well

On 29 October 1955, industrial oil flowed from Karamay No. 1 Well. This event marked the announcement of the discovery of the first large oilfield in the People’s Republic of China. The precise date makes the story vivid: the focus is not just a general connection to petroleum production, but a specific moment and a well identified by name. Its historical significance is also reflected in two later designations. In 2007, Karamay No. 1 Well was designated a cultural relic at the autonomous region level; in 2013, the State Council designated it a national key cultural relic. This sequence takes the story from the discovery of oil to later recognition at two different levels. Those interested in history will find more than a single date here: the event, location and protected status are connected.

The scenic area is also directly linked to the well. It was established in 2015 at the original site of Karamay No. 1 Well and is dedicated to the “Big Oil Bubble”; it was also designated a national AAA tourist attraction. The two designations should not be confused: the cultural relic is Karamay No. 1 Well itself, while the AAA designation applies to the scenic area. The historic well and the scenic attraction dedicated to it can therefore be viewed as distinct but thematically connected points of interest. This approach brings cultural history together with the landscape, rather than focusing solely on the technical significance of the oil discovery.

Parks, River and Movement

Century Park lies south of the central scenic area on the Karamay River. Another place to get active is the Ecological Recreation and Fitness Park in Karamay District, which has a 2.3-kilometre fitness trail. Participants walked along this trail during a guided walking event. Its focus on physical activity sets it apart from the historical interpretation at the well and complements the riverside landscape with an active dimension.

Oil Tools at the Museum

Another way to explore oil history was the “Recreating Oil Tools in Clay” workshop at the Karamay Museum. This session was scheduled for 14 March 2026. Participants were to recreate oil production facilities and drill bits in clay. The juxtaposition brings two aspects of petroleum production to life: production facilities represent the technical infrastructure, while drill bits are tools used for drilling. Both were to be featured in the workshop as clay objects. The historical theme thus extends from the specific well and its later designation to the tools and facilities featured in a museum activity.

If you’re planning a trip with family or a travel group, you can weigh up these different interests together: should oil history shape your stay, are you more interested in the landscape, or would you like to include some physical activity? When looking for a holiday apartment in Karamay, this can be a good starting point for deciding what kind of trip you want before planning your accommodation and daily itinerary.
