Qamdo is a mountain city whose character is shaped by two rivers and a layered history. At Tea-Horse Square, city life meets Tibetan handicrafts; the Qamdo Museum and Jambaling Temple offer further ways to explore the region’s history. If you want to choose between exploring the city and focusing on historical topics during your trip, Qamdo offers a variety of starting points.

A City Between the Zhaqu, Angqu, and Lancang

The Zhaqu and Angqu rivers divide Qamdo into three districts: Yunnanba, Sichuanba, and Macaoba. Bridges connect the districts. The name Qamdo also refers to the river landscape: the Zhaqu and Angqu meet there to form the Lancang River. Jambaling Temple stands on a rocky island between the Angqu and Zhaqu, facing their confluence. Thus, waterways shape not only the layout of the mountain city but also feature in its historic architecture.

Tea-Horse Square runs east to west through the center of Qamdo. It is about 150 meters long and covers approximately 20,000 square meters. The complex around the square combines shopping and tea venues with leisure facilities and shops selling Tibetan handicrafts. Those interested in local traditions will find a different way to experience the city here than in the historical exhibitions. In the evening, people dance Guozhuang to music at Tea-Horse Square, a traditional dance from Qamdo.

Museum, Trade History, and Archaeological Traces

The Qamdo Museum is less than a ten-minute walk east of Tea-Horse Square. Its exhibition on the Tea Horse Road includes rusty stirrups, worn carrying bags, and yellowed caravan books. Projected scenes of caravans complement these objects. Together, they bring tangible objects and images to the story of trade, rather than conveying it only through names or accounts. The museum also displays a replica of a double-bellied vessel dating back approximately 4,000 to 5,000 years.

The original vessel was excavated at the Karuo archaeological site and is now housed at the Tibet Museum. It is considered an important resource for studying early Tibetan history, Neolithic culture, and the origins of the Tibetan people. The nearby Karuo cultural site is in Karuo Village, in Karuo District, about 12 kilometers southeast of the urban area. It is a Late Neolithic archaeological site dating back approximately 4,000 to 5,000 years. In Qamdo, a museum object and the place where it was excavated are therefore connected by a specific historical link.

Jambaling Temple and Tea-Horse City

Construction of Jambaling Temple began in 1437 and was completed in 1444. In 1962, the temple was included in the first group of cultural heritage sites of the Tibet Autonomous Region. Its complex includes the Maitreya Hall, the Main Assembly Hall, the Debate Hall, the Protector Hall, the Tara Hall, and the Mandala Hall. It also comprises nine monastic colleges and eight auspicious stupas. This variety makes the temple an important point of interest for anyone seeking to understand Qamdo through its religious and historical influences.

Another architectural complex is Tea-Horse City. Its traditionally inspired architecture brings together a museum, a Tibetan art gallery, an exhibition hall, and a Tea-Horse station. Guild halls from Yunnan, Sichuan, and Shaanxi, as well as rows of shops, are also part of the complex. This mix of exhibition spaces, guild halls, and shops makes Tea-Horse City a distinctive cultural feature alongside the temple and museum.
