Discover Haidong: Nianbo on the Huangshui
Accommodation in Haidong
Near Haidong, Nianbo offers a specific starting point: the town lies on both banks of the Huangshui; Xilai Temple is within Nianbo, while Qutan Temple is nearby. Xiazhai is the venue for the pear blossom festival, whose eighth edition took place in 2025. The riverside setting, temple history, and festival programme offer different points of interest for planning your trip.
Nianbo on the Huangshui
The Huangshui is a prominent geographical reference point for Nianbo, which extends along both banks of the river. Three transport routes also pass through the town: the Lanzhou–Qinghai Railway, China National Highway 109, and the G6 Beijing–Tibet Expressway. The railway, national highway, and expressway are distinct routes in the town area and help place Nianbo geographically. For your planning, you can combine this orientation with cultural sites: Xilai Temple is in Nianbo, while Qutan is nearby. This makes it clear which destination is in town and which temple is close by when choosing what to focus on during a trip to Haidong.
Temples and historical context
Xilai Temple is located on Dongguan Street. It was built in 1606, when Ledu was the county seat. This date links a specific place in Nianbo to a historical period of local administration. For travellers interested in architectural history, it provides a clear point of reference. Compared with Qutan Temple, founded in 1392, Xilai Temple was built more than two centuries later. The two temples can therefore be distinguished both by their locations and by their different historical dates.
Qutan Temple is in Qutan, Ledu District, about 21 kilometres from the county seat at the time. It was founded in 1392, in the 25th year of the Hongwu era of the Ming dynasty, and is more than 600 years old. It is known for its imposing yet simple architecture, valuable cultural relics, and intricate murals. These features bring together architecture and visual art, giving the temple a distinctive cultural profile. As a nearby destination, Qutan adds to Nianbo’s temple history without being confused with Xilai Temple on Dongguan Street.
Pear blossom festival in Xiazhai
The pear blossom festival has been held repeatedly in Xiazhai; its eighth edition took place in 2025. The programme included viewing the pear blossoms and cultural performances such as qipao fashion shows, instrumental music, and tai chi. There were also stalls selling agricultural products, vegetable picking, photography, and nighttime light installations. The 2025 edition combined the blossom theme with stage culture, hands-on activities, and evening attractions. It offers a different focus from the temples: here, the main attraction is the festival in Xiazhai.
Choose the right focus for your trip
If you are looking for a holiday rental in Haidong, you can choose where to stay based on your planned interests. Nianbo combines its location on the Huangshui with Xilai Temple and the transport routes that pass through the town. Qutan adds to the temple history nearby, while Xiazhai is the destination for the pear blossom festival. Consider whether you want to focus on Nianbo or also include Qutan and Xiazhai in your plans. This lets you take account of the riverside setting, temples, and festival as different travel interests, rather than treating all the places as a single experience.
