Discover Yinchuan
Accommodation in Yinchuan
Yinchuan brings together striking traces of the Xixia Dynasty and a landscape where mountains, plains and wetlands reveal different facets of the city. The Xixia Imperial Tombs lie in front of the Helan Mountains, overlooking the Yinchuan Plain and facing the Yellow River. East of Yinchuan, Mingcui Lake offers a very different focus: the wetland and its conservation. When planning your trip, you can choose between cultural history and nature-related themes.
The Xixia Imperial Tombs and their visitor areas
The Xixia Imperial Tombs are the imperial necropolis of the Xixia Dynasty. They comprise nine imperial mausoleums and 271 subordinate tombs. There is also a northern architectural complex and 32 flood-control structures. These figures show how many different elements make up the site: alongside the imperial tombs, it includes subordinate burial sites, architecture and flood-control structures. History enthusiasts will therefore find not just a single building here, but an extensive cultural heritage made up of several elements.
The visitor area is also divided into two sections, separated by National Highway 110. The Xixia heritage area is to the west, with on-site presentations of the ruins. To the east is a cultural tourism and service centre. It houses the Xixia Imperial Tombs Museum, a digital cultural creation experience centre and a visitor centre. This layout gives you a clear sense of the different areas of the site: the presentations of the ruins are the focus in the west, while the named facilities of the centre are in the east.
Haibao Pagoda in Xingqing District
Another cultural and historical attraction is Haibao Pagoda, also known as the North Pagoda. It is located in Haibao Pagoda Temple in Xingqing District, Yinchuan. In 1961, the pagoda was designated a Major Historical and Cultural Site Protected at the National Level. Its name, North Pagoda, and its location in the temple are useful points of reference if you want to get to know Yinchuan through its cultural sites. Together with the Xixia heritage, it adds another named structure to the city’s cultural landscape.
Mingcui Lake: wetlands and environmental education
Mingcui Lake National Wetland Park lies east of Yinchuan in Xingqing District and covers 589 hectares. Mingcui Lake is a national wetland park and a nationally significant wetland. In November 2023, it was added to the list of nationally significant wetlands; it is also classified as a national 4A tourist attraction. Both its status as a wetland and its tourism classification are therefore specified.
At Mingcui Lake, ecotourism and environmental education are used to promote the conservation and restoration of the wetland. This makes nature conservation and education important themes at this site. For families who are not interested exclusively in historical sites, the lake offers a distinct nature-focused alternative to Yinchuan’s cultural attractions. When planning your trip, you can consider whether you want it to focus mainly on the history of the Xixia Dynasty, cultural sites, or wetlands and environmental education.
Which focus suits your trip?
These different themes can also help structure your search for a holiday rental in Yinchuan. If you are mainly interested in cultural history, you can choose between the Xixia Imperial Tombs and their presentations of the ruins, and Haibao Pagoda. If you are interested in wetlands and their conservation, Mingcui Lake offers a different focus.
