Fuxin: Mining History and Culture
Accommodation in Fuxin
Fuxin is best explored through its culture and mining history. Nearby, Haizhou Open-Pit National Mine Park and a memorial site for the victims of a miners’ mass grave offer two different perspectives on the subject. Further afield, the Fuxin City Museum and Water Tower Park add to the options. This range is interesting for planning a trip: it spans remembrance of miners, cultural and historical collections, and places for recreation and enjoying the landscape. If you’re travelling with children, you can decide together which of these themes most sparks your curiosity.
Mining History and Remembrance
Haizhou Open-Pit National Mine Park is located in Taiping District and is one of China’s first national mining parks; it is also the only national mining park in Liaoning. The memorial site for the victims of the Fuxin miners’ mass grave is also in Taiping District and is protected as a major national cultural heritage site. Its grounds cover 56.97 hectares. The remains of young workers who died during an uprising are housed in the East Hall; the West Hall contains the remains of deceased miners. The memorial site is described as the best-preserved and largest mass-grave site for deceased miners in Northeast China.
The memorial site’s distinctions also form part of the wider region’s appeal: it was recognised as a major national cultural heritage site in 2006, designated a national patriotic education site in 2009, and included in the first national list of memorial sites and locations associated with the War of Resistance Against Japan in 2014. In the wider region, it is also a red tourism destination in Liaoning and a practical training site for the province’s educational cadres.
Collections and Attractions Further Afar
The Fuxin City Museum holds more than 3,000 cultural artefacts dating from antiquity to the Republican period. Its collection covers more than ten main categories, including ceramics and jade, calligraphy and painting, as well as steles and inscriptions. Its broad historical scope is thus matched by a variety of object types. Those interested in different forms of historical heritage will find a different perspective here than at the nearby mining and memorial sites.
Also in the wider region, Fuxin Water Tower Park is located in Haizhou District. It includes a museum on the history of the Communist Party, a health and fitness trail, and a tai chi garden; altogether, it has more than 30 landscaped and sports facilities. Unlike the museum, whose collection provides insights into different eras and objects, the park focuses on a mix of gardens, exercise and sports facilities. These are different themes that you can weigh up when planning your days.
Choosing the Right Base
When looking for a holiday rental in Fuxin, your preferred focus for the trip can be a useful starting point: would you like to explore mining history and remembrance above all, are you interested in the cultural and historical collection, or would you also like to include the facilities at Water Tower Park in your plans? The nearby area and the wider region offer different themes. That way, choosing a base begins with the experiences you want to put at the centre of your trip.
