Lianyungang offers several very different reasons to visit: a striking island coastline, mountains with an extraordinary geological history, and museums and historic sites. If you are travelling with children, you can make your own interests the focus: should the trip be mainly about landscapes, stories from the Han period, or exhibitions on local culture? These themes can also help you decide whether Lianyungang is the right destination when looking for a holiday apartment or holiday home.

Island Coastline and Mountains

The Lian Island Scenic Area encompasses the largest rocky island in Jiangsu Province. Its coastline is 17.66 kilometres long, and it covers an area of 8.1 square kilometres. These figures give a concrete sense of the scale of the scenic area without reducing the island to a single viewpoint. Lian Island is particularly relevant to your travel decision if island and coastal landscapes are among your interests. The scenic area has also been added to the newly established national list of 5A tourist attractions.

The mountains add a distinct character of their own. At the Huaguo Mountain Scenic Area, Yunv Peak rises to 624.4 metres, making it the highest peak in Jiangsu Province. At Kongwang Mountain, the range consists mainly of granite and gneiss, and its geological history dates back 1.8 billion years. The contrast brings Lianyungang’s different landscape themes into focus: one is a peak with a clearly stated elevation, while the other is a mountain range with a very long geological history. Kongwang Mountain is a national 4A tourist attraction.

The Han Period and the City’s History

At Kongwang Mountain are Buddhist rock carvings from the Eastern Han period, almost 2,000 years old. Historians call them the “first rock Buddha of the nine regions.” Also dating from the Han period is a fully sculpted stone elephant statue carved from a block of granite. It is considered China’s largest fully sculpted stone elephant statue and the “first elephant of China.” Visitors interested in early Buddhist art or stone sculptures will find two distinct subjects here, differing in material and form.

The Old Street on Minzhu Road, formerly called Zhongshan Road, offers another way to explore the city’s history. Located in central Lianyungang, it is 650 metres long and is designated a national 3A tourist attraction. It includes 18 municipal-level protected heritage sites. The publicly accessible area contains exhibition halls, including the Bell Tower History Museum, the Haizhou Good People Museum, the Folklore Museum, the Dahua Cultural Exchange Center, the Master Zhou Cunyu Art Museum and the Municipal Intangible Cultural Heritages Museum. Their different names point to a range of subjects, from history and folklore to art and intangible cultural heritage.

Museum and Trip Planning

The Lianyungang Museum preserves more than 10,000 cultural objects. Its exhibition themes include local history, Han-period tomb documents, the culture of the Journey to the West, and the art of stone inscriptions. The museum is open free of charge on a permanent basis. Alongside the historic sites and scenic areas, it offers a museum with several clearly defined themes to consider when planning your trip.

When looking for a holiday apartment in Lianyungang, you can first consider which of these themes you want to explore on your trip: island coastline, mountains, Han-period art, or the history of the city and its museums. Information about road, rail, water and air transport describes an integrated modern transport network. Which modes of transport suit your arrival or individual journeys depends on your specific travel plans; the landscape and cultural themes listed above provide a factual starting point for choosing your destination.
