Laibin offers a journey through very different layers of time: geological features, a Palaeolithic human fossil, and remains from the Southern Song Dynasty. You can tailor your stay to the theme that interests you most: geological trails, the discovery story of the “麒麟山人,” or historical traces on an island in the Hongshui River. For families and other people travelling together, this contrast can provide a thread for conversation: What can a fossil tell us about the distant past, and how does that story differ from the remains of a dynasty?

Geological Trails and Fossils

In the municipality that includes the destination, the protected area around the Permian section of 蓬莱洲 contains a trail through the geological monument and a scientific exploration trail. The monument trail and the scientific trail offer different perspectives on the protected area. Maintenance and access rules may change; check the current conditions before your visit. Also near Laibin is the 蓬莱洲(时光岛) tourism resort in Chengxiang Town, Xingbin District. A 2025 report describes it as a national 4A-rated scenic area and gives its distance from Laibin’s urban area as 16 km. Visitors can explore geological features there and learn about prehistoric fossils. This offers two distinct ways to explore the history of the Earth: geological exploration and prehistoric fossils.

A Discovery on Two Timescales

Near Laibin, a fragment of a human skull base was discovered on January 14, 1956, in Gaitou Cave on Qilin Mountain and named “麒麟山人.” The find is dated to around 30,000 years before present and attributed to the Late Palaeolithic. These details tell two different stories: 1956 is the year of discovery, while the dating places the fossil in a much earlier period. This illustrates the difference between the modern history of the discovery and the Palaeolithic, without confusing the two dates. The fossil is housed in the Museum of Paleozoology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences; a replica is kept at the Guangxi Museum. The discovery site is in Xingbin District and was designated a cultural relic site of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region in February 1963.

Island History on the Hongshui River

Historical remains from the Southern Song Dynasty are located on 蓬莱洲时光岛 in the Hongshui River. A “Golden Spike” there is also described as the world’s fourth. Unlike the “麒麟山人,” the focus here is not the dating of a human fossil, but the history of an island and the remains of a dynasty. This offers a way to compare prehistoric archaeology and dynastic history as distinct themes for a trip connected to Laibin.
