Amajuba combines cultural history with specific places and varied landscapes. Fort Amiel, the Majuba battlefield and the arts offerings in Newcastle give the destination distinctive historical and cultural points of interest. Ntshingwayo Dam and Utrecht Balele Community Game Park offer a different perspective. When looking for a holiday apartment, it helps to first consider which of these themes you want your holiday days to focus on.

Route and Cultural History

The Amajuba Route covers the Amajuba District area in the northwestern corner of KwaZulu-Natal. It includes Dannhauser, Utrecht and Newcastle, and lies at the foot of the Drakensberg. Before planning a specific route, check whether the route is currently operating.

Fort Amiel is part of the Northern KZN Battlefields Route. The fort opened in 1990 as Newcastle’s cultural history museum and is located at a restored British military post. It was built in 1876 by the 80th Regiment, also known as the Staffordshire Regiment. Historical exhibits include a traditional Zulu homestead, a muthi garden and the Prince Imperial Herbal Garden. The selection of exhibits may change.

Majuba: Battlefield and Farm Museums

The Battle of Majuba ended the Transvaal War of Independence, also known as the First Boer War. The battlefield is accessible via the N11 and Kwaggasnek Road. Check road conditions and signage before setting out. The battlefield has a museum, a youth hostel, a picnic area, a caravan area and toilets; check whether the facilities are available before your trip.

At Majuba Commemorative Farm, you’ll find a small orientation museum and a farm museum with old wagons and agricultural equipment. The farm also has short hiking trails leading up to and around the mountain. This lets you include a museum visit and exercise as separate priorities in your plans. Check trail conditions before hiking.

Art and Cultural Offerings

The Carnegie Art Gallery is a public art museum in Newcastle’s Central Business District, next to the Municipal Gardens. If you’re planning a visit, check current exhibitions and visitor information.

In Utrecht, KwaNtu Village at 45 Voor St offers traditional dance and culture. The Art and Craft Route enables visits to artists in their studios or workplaces around Newcastle. As the artists are not always available, arrange a suitable time in advance.

Choose a Location Based on Your Plans

When choosing a holiday apartment, specific locations can help guide your decision: Newcastle is relevant if you’re planning to visit the Carnegie Art Gallery or the Art and Craft Route; KwaNtu Village is in Utrecht. For Majuba, factor the road access and the condition of the hiking trails into your plans. Consider whether art, cultural history or the trails on the mountain will be your main focus, and tailor your search to a suitable base.

In the Wider Destination of Kwazulu-Natal
