Uthukela: Drakensberg, Hiking Trails and History

In Uthukela, mountain landscapes, hiking trails and cultural discoveries come together. Tourist attractions in the uThukela District Municipality include the uKhahlamba Drakensberg Mountains. The Tugela Falls are also in the region. Royal Natal National Park is a well-known hiking area, offering trails and attractive picnic spots for families. It was declared a national park in 1916.

The Up The Tugela River (Gorge) to the Tunnel hike has a different time commitment: this 23 km out-and-back route starts and ends at the Mahai camp site and takes about seven hours. The Icidi Pass hike starts and ends at the Mnweni Cultural Centre in Mnweni Valley, takes at least three days and is considered extremely difficult. Different traces of nature and history also shape the region beyond its hiking trails. Wagendrift Dam and Moor Park Nature Reserve covers approximately 980 ha and includes a picnic and fishing spot. Large fossil deposits lie on the southern side of Wagendrift Dam, where numerous fossilised trees are exposed at the surface. An Iron Age site dating to around 1300 AD is located on Makhabeni Hill, overlooking Moor Park. Rugged Glen Nature Reserve is part of Drakensberg uKhahlamba Park and borders the northern foothills of Royal Natal National Park.

Cultural history and special experiences

Historic battlefields are among the tourist attractions in the uThukela District Municipality. Spioenkop Dam Nature Reserve was the site of one of the bloodiest battles of the Anglo-Boer War. Ladysmith Siege Museum is a stop on the Battlefields Route. In the Drakensberg area, cultural travellers can also explore rock art; Mnweni Cultural Village is a cultural tourism attraction. Thandanani is a cooperative of local craftspeople that sells handicrafts typical of the region.
