Kenton-On-Sea between river and tides
Accommodation in Kenton-On-Sea
In Kenton-On-Sea, the river mouth, sandbank and coast meet. Tides, beach activities and paths by the water give a holiday here different focuses. If you choose a holiday apartment as your base, you can decide whether to focus mainly on exploring the beaches and places by the water or also plan trips to other destinations.
Tides and experiences on the Bushman’s River
The Island is a sandbank on the Kenton side of the Bushman’s River, near its mouth. Corner Rocks is also on this side, near the river mouth. At sufficiently low water, both places can be reached by wading across a channel; alternatively, you can get there by boat. Check local tide conditions before setting out. Children often play cricket and rounders on The Island and at Corner Rocks.
On the other side of the Bushman’s River is a sandy area suited to quiet stays and nature walks. It offers a different focus from the activities on Kenton’s beaches: here, the emphasis is on a peaceful stay on the sand.
Beaches, tidal pools and coastal paths
The tourism information lists Middle Beach and Kariega Main Beach as Blue Flag beaches, with safety, cleanliness and facilities among the criteria. If this designation matters to your choice of beach, check its current status before your visit. At Middle Beach, Blue Pool is a natural tidal pool enclosed by rocks, suitable for snorkelling and swimming. Conditions there change with the tide.
Kariega Main Beach is a good spot for sunset walks, stand-up paddling and surfing. You can shape your time on the beach according to your interests, whether with activity on the water or a walk at the end of the day. Shelly Bay can be reached via a coastal path; another route starts at Middle Beach and passes the rock formation Carriage Rock. A visit at low tide is recommended. As access depends on the tide, check local conditions before setting out.
