Joubertina can be explored through three specific themes: its mountain setting, outdoor activities and local history, reflected in buildings with documented dates. This combination offers different approaches to planning your trip. First decide whether your trip will focus more on hiking and mountain biking trails, mountaineering or the history of the town. You can then tailor your search for a holiday rental to your plans.

Mountain scenery and ideas for an active trip

Joubertina is said to be surrounded by the Kouga Mountains, the Baviaanskloof Mountains and the Tsitsikamma Mountain Range. The three mountain range names give the landscape a distinctive outline. There are around 30 trails in total in the area for mountain biking and hiking. This approximate total gives you a tangible sense of the trails available; you can still focus your trip more on hiking, mountain biking or a mix of both. The Peak Formosa adds mountaineering to this outdoor focus and is considered a destination for experienced mountaineers. If you plan to visit specific trails or The Peak Formosa, check current conditions and access in advance.

Formosa Nature Reserve in the surrounding area

Formosa Nature Reserve lies near Joubertina. It is a large mountain reserve between Kareedouw and Misgund that encompasses a long stretch of the Tsitsikamma Range. Its location gives you a second regional nature destination to consider when planning your trip, in addition to Joubertina’s mountain scenery. The different themes can also be distinguished geographically: trails and historical points of interest are in Joubertina, while the nature reserve is in the surrounding area.

Founding, church construction and local history

Joubertina was founded in 1907 on a piece of farmland in the Eastern Cape. The Dutch Reformed Church in Joubertina dates from 1911 and is considered the town’s first building. The two dates provide a concise chronology: 1907 marks the founding, and 1911 the first building. The church was built of sandstone and yellowwood. This adds a specific architectural feature to the historical timeline.

The Kloof Hotel and the Hotel Tavern are also considered historically significant. The Hotel Tavern houses an exhibition of more than 1,000 miniature car models. Unlike the founding and the construction of the church, the focus here is on a collection. If you would like to include the exhibition in your visit, check current access in advance.

Which themes suit your trip?

When searching for a holiday rental, you can use these themes to make a practical choice: would you like to spend most of your time outdoors, include mountaineering or focus on local history? Distinguishing Joubertina itself from the nature reserve in the surrounding area helps you organise your specific plans geographically. Then compare the accommodation’s location with the focus of your stay.
