Langstrand: Beach, Tidal Pools and Namib Dunes
Accommodation in Langstrand
Langstrand combines time at the beach with a striking coastal landscape: Langstrand Beach lies between the Atlantic and the dunes of the Namib Desert. The interplay of sea and desert landscape shapes the character of the place.
Beach Time to Suit You
The main beach has tidal pools and good swimming conditions. A beach picnic and a leisurely walk are also among the options. Langstrand is also described as having consistent waves that are used for surfing; conditions can vary. A picnic and a walk offer a different focus from surfing. If you plan to make beach visits a regular part of your trip, Langstrand may be a natural place to search for a holiday apartment.
Seasonal Wildlife Watching
From November to April, migratory birds such as flamingos can be seen in the nearby lagoons. These sightings can vary. The lagoons therefore offer a seasonal nature experience in the vicinity of Langstrand, alongside the beach activities right at the destination.
More Highlights in the Wider Erongo Destination
Cape Cross Seal Reserve is a protected area for the world’s largest breeding colony of Cape fur seals. During the breeding season in November and December, up to 210,000 animals gather there; this estimated maximum can vary from year to year. A walkway makes it easier to view the seals. Check the current condition of the walkway before visiting.
Cape Cross is also associated with a historical event: Portuguese seafarer Diego Cão landed there in 1486 and erected a stone padrão. A replica is visible today; its visible condition may change. The area, including a second replica, is designated a National Heritage Site. One cultural highlight in the Erongo region is the Living Museum of the Ju/'Hoansi San at Omandumba. A visit includes demonstrations of traditional dances and rituals, as well as games; this adds a tangible cultural dimension to the region’s nature and landscape highlights.
Landscapes and Protected Areas in Erongo
In the northwest of the Erongo Region, Brandberg, the distinctive Spitzkoppe Mountains and the very old Messum Crater are among the natural landmarks. Spitzkoppe is often called “Namibia’s Matterhorn”; its age is estimated at nearly 700 million years. Its highest point reaches 1,784 metres above sea level and rises around 700 metres above the surrounding plain. Thus, alongside Langstrand’s coastal landscape, the Erongo Region offers a very different landscape to explore.
Dorob National Park is part of the region’s protected-area landscape. Henties Bay, Swakopmund and the hamlet of Wlotzkasbaken lie within the park; the dune belt between Swakopmund and Walvis Bay is also within its boundaries. Walvis Bay Lagoon and Sandwich Harbour are Ramsar-designated bird sanctuaries. Sandwich Harbour lies about 30 kilometres south of Walvis Bay.
