Taroudant is surrounded by the mountains of the High Atlas and the Anti-Atlas. In the city, the medina, city walls and souk shape the townscape; outside the walls, argan oil is produced. The area also offers the green Tioute Oasis and hiking and mountain-biking routes through mountain landscapes. If you are looking for a holiday apartment, you can shape your trip around whether you are most interested in experiencing city life, traditional crafts or nature.

Mountain landscapes and trails

Taroudant is considered a starting point for numerous hikes in the Atlas Mountains. Those interested in excursions will also find a distinctive landscape in the Tifnoute Valley: hiking and mountain-biking routes run alongside the river through scenery characterised by waterfalls and green mountain landscapes. The two topics differ in their focus as described—from the Atlas Mountains as a hiking area to the hiking and cycling routes along the river.

Toubkal National Park extends across the central High Atlas and overlaps with Taroudant Province. It is home to the largest population of Barbary sheep in North Africa. Notable bird species in the park include bearded vultures and golden eagles. If nature and wildlife are the focus of your trip, you can consider these details alongside the hiking trails as another point of reference when making your choices.

Medina, market and cultural impressions

Taroudant’s traditional souk offers a glimpse of traditional Moroccan market life among colourful stalls and lively lanes. The city walls also help preserve the history and traditions of the medina. Horse-drawn carriages take visitors to the walls; carriage rides usually last between 30 minutes and an hour. The carriages are based at Alaouyine Square.

Bab El Kasbah is the medina’s oldest gate and offers panoramic views of the kasbah and nearby gardens. East of the medina stands Taroudant’s Great Mosque, Al Masjid Al Aâdam. Together with its madrasa, it covers more than 3,200 square metres. Al Masjid Al Aâdam continues to be a centre for the religious education of imams and Talmudic scholars—a distinctive aspect for travellers interested in the city’s religious and cultural significance.

Traditional crafts are also part of Taroudant’s character. The traditional tannery is still in operation and introduces visitors to the time-honoured methods of leather production. Taskiwin is Taroudant’s war dance; its name refers to the dancers’ decorative horns. Both traditions complement the impressions created by the souk, medina and city walls with aspects of craftsmanship and dance culture.

Tioute Oasis and argan oil

In a dry environment, Tioute Oasis forms a lush green patchwork of grain fields, fruit trees and wild palms. Visitors can walk along irrigation channels, arrange donkey or mule rides, and picnic beneath an argan tree. Possible experiences range from a walk along the channels to an arranged ride or a break under the tree.

The oasis is dominated by a 16th-century kasbah. Formerly the palace of a caid, it overlooks the palm grove and more distant villages. Outside Taroudant’s city walls, cooperatives and private producers make argan oil: they shell the nuts, press them and offer the finished oil for tasting. The region therefore offers both argan production and the green oasis landscape as distinct points of interest.

When looking for accommodation, it helps to first decide what you want to focus on during your trip: the medina, market and crafts are suited to culturally focused plans, while hiking trails, wildlife and oasis experiences appeal to other interests.
