Saint Catherine brings together monastic history and a striking mountain landscape. Saint Catherine's Monastery is of great architectural and historical importance for its Byzantine architecture and houses outstanding collections of early Christian manuscripts and icons. At the same time, the city serves as a base for exploring the trails and valleys of the surrounding mountains. If you are looking for a holiday rental in Saint Catherine, you can first decide whether monastic art, mountain hikes or a mix of both will shape your stay.

Monastic Art and History

The Church of the Transfiguration of Christ the Savior at the monastery comprises nine smaller churches. The Church of St Catherine features an intricately carved wooden door and the famous mosaic of the Transfiguration, one of the monastery's best-known treasures. Both churches have their own distinctive character within the monastery complex.

The collections also offer different ways to explore history: the library contains around 6,000 manuscripts on religion, history, geography and philosophy; the oldest date from the 4th century AD. The Sacred Sacristy Museum houses religious manuscripts, artworks and icons. A Fatimid mosque is also part of the monastery.

In the wider destination of South Sinai, the monastery's history dates back to the 6th century. It was built between 548 and 565 AD on the orders of the Byzantine emperor Justinian I to house monks who had been living on the Sinai Peninsula since the 4th century. The Fatimid mosque was built in 1106 AD during the rule of Caliph al-Amir bi-Ahkam Allah. Its religious significance also extends beyond a single building: the area of Saint Catherine is sacred to Christianity, Islam and Judaism. According to tradition, the Burning Bush is said to be the place where God spoke to Moses.

Elevation and Landscape

In South Sinai, the city and the Saint Catherine Protectorate lie at an elevation of 1,600 metres above sea level. In winter, Saint Catherine regularly experiences light snowfall because of its elevation; the amount of snow varies from year to year. The nearby mountains offer a very different landscape from the monastery's walls and collections.

The surrounding valleys feature narrow gorges, boulders, unusual rock formations, small springs, streams and natural pools. Hikers may spot Sinai baton blue butterflies, Nubian ibex and hyraxes, though sightings are not guaranteed. The nearby Saint Catherine Protectorate is mountainous and of spiritual, historical, geological and biological significance.

Hiking and Planning Your Stay

Saint Catherine serves as a base for exploring the surrounding mountain range, with its many trails and valleys. A hike up nearby Mount Sinai that begins before sunrise is undertaken with Bedouin guides. The ascent to the 2,285-metre summit takes 3 to 4 hours; the actual duration depends on the route, weather and hiking pace. Check the current access conditions before planning.

Nearby Mount St Catherine reaches 2,642 metres and is considered a challenging climb for experienced, physically fit hikers. Camel rides are offered on some mountain trails to break up longer hikes; confirm availability locally. Some routes involve multi-day hikes with overnight camping. What can be arranged may vary depending on the provider and conditions. Along the way, hikers can drink traditional Bedouin tea and listen to stories; such arrangements also depend on the particular excursion.

Before setting out on a mountain adventure on the Mountain Trails, check with a tour operator, hotel or licensed guide to find out whether the activity is open to visitors. The different tours also require varying amounts of time: allow several hours for the ascent on the Mount Sinai hike described above, while some mountain trails take several days.

When choosing a holiday apartment or holiday home in Saint Catherine, your preferred focus is therefore a good starting point. If you are especially interested in architecture, manuscripts and icons, you can make the monastery complex the centre of your stay. If you would rather spend time in the valleys and on mountain trails, take the tour duration and desired level of difficulty into account when planning.
