Mandishah: Oasis Landscape and History
Accommodation in Mandishah
Mandishah is part of the eastern group of villages in the Bahariya Oasis and lies about 8 kilometres east of Bawiti. The distance between Mandishah and Zabu is no more than 1 kilometre. This alone shows the village as part of an oasis landscape with its own local character: some areas have rocky sand hills, and agriculture relied on groundwater both in earlier times and in the modern era.
Mandishah is home to some of the best-known date factories in the Bahariya Oasis. Date factories and groundwater-based agriculture are two specific facets of the village: one points to processing, the other to a foundation of agriculture. If you are looking for a holiday rental, you can take these aspects of the village’s character into account when choosing your destination.
For practical information: Mandishah has a local health centre. The telephone number is 38496075.
Gabal al-Ingleez and the history of the oasis
Nearby, between Mandishah and Bawiti, lies Gabal al-Ingleez. The mountain got its name because English troops were stationed there during the British occupation of the oasis. Its location and the historical explanation of its name connect a specific place with a chapter in the history of Bahariya.
The archaeological sites also have different geographical associations. The Siqam-B site is in Qabala and is associated with the village of Mandishah. It was designated archaeological land in 2023 and covers 32 feddans, 14 qirats and 20.9 sahms, equivalent to 137,029.50 m². The site has numerous archaeological traces and visible rock tombs.
The Ain Abu al-Ezz archaeological site is associated with the village of Mandishah in the centre of the Bahariya Oasis. It covers 11 feddans and 3 qirats and was placed under Egypt’s Antiquities Protection Law No. 117 of 1983, including its amendments and implementing regulations. The protection decision was reported in January 2017.
In the Mandishah area, antiquities are found mainly around cultivated land and old springs. Historical accounts mention aqueducts in Mandishah; the area is also associated with Roman antiquities. Mandishah’s cultural history includes historical accounts of aqueducts and the area’s connection to Roman antiquities.
Date festival and activities in the region
The eighth edition of the International Date Festival was held in 2025 in Giza Governorate for the first time: the venue was the village of Mandishah in the centre of the Bahariya Oasis. In 2025, the International Date Festival brought a cultural highlight to Mandishah.
If you are looking for more activity ideas, it is worth exploring the wider Al-Bahariyya region. You can explore villages, springs, palm groves, orchards and historical sites by bicycle. If you enjoy hiking, you can take a hike to Gabal Maghrafa in the region; the mountain is known for dinosaur fossils discovered there. These cycling and hiking activities relate to the region; they are not specific to Mandishah alone.
Choosing the right location for your holiday rental
When looking for a holiday rental, it helps to decide what you want to focus on: would you like to centre your stay on Mandishah itself, with its agriculture, date factories and historical connections, or would you also like to consider activities across the wider Bahariya region? Some of the archaeological sites are associated with Mandishah, others with Qabala; cycling and hiking to Gabal Maghrafa are regional options. This allows you to weigh up the specific village location and the wider area for activities separately, rather than treating them as one and the same.
