At Al-Lisan in Ras El-Bar, the Nile’s fresh water meets the Mediterranean’s salt water. This meeting of river and sea gives the coastal town a distinctive landscape. The city’s beaches add to its appeal. When choosing a holiday apartment, you can consider whether your stay will focus mainly on beach time or whether you would also like to include Al-Lisan in your plans.

Nine beaches of varying widths

A report published on December 2, 2024, mentions nine beaches stretching for about three kilometres, from the area behind the sea inlet to the southwestern part of the city. A 2024 field survey gives the average beach width as 60 metres. At their narrowest points, the beaches are at least 40 metres wide, and in some places they reach up to 120 metres. This range describes different beach profiles; the measurements may change over time.

For orientation, the number and extent of the beaches give an impression of Ras El-Bar’s coastal landscape. You can take these local highlights into account when looking for a holiday apartment, while also deciding whether a visit to the Nile estuary is part of your holiday plans.

Al-Lisan: River, Sea and Culture

Tourists visit Al-Lisan and the Nile estuary in Ras El-Bar to take photos and observe the dividing zone between the river and the sea. In August 2026, the Roman Theatre at Al-Lisan hosted public music and performance events as part of the “Art Beach” programme. This also links the place to a specific cultural event, in addition to its striking meeting of fresh and salt water.

Development along the Al-Lisan Corniche

A development project for the seafront corniche and promenade in the Al-Lisan area included plans to build a theatre with a capacity of 750 people. The project description also covers a 7,000 m² corniche area with green spaces, amenities and decorative seating. Another planned element was a 700-metre cycle path around the promenade’s plazas.

Plans also included larger areas for visitors to spend time and access services. A main restaurant area totalling 5,200 m² was planned, including a 2,000 m² granite courtyard, green spaces and trees, as well as an upper courtyard with ramps for people with disabilities. Tourism development at Al-Lisan included a promenade with shops and services; food trucks and parking areas were also part of the project. These project ideas can therefore be understood as part of the area’s development, without implying that they are currently available.

More perspectives on the wider destination of Ad-Daqahliyya

Travellers who also consider the wider destination of Ad-Daqahliyya when planning a holiday will find further coastal and cultural themes there. In the north of Dakahlīyah lies the seaside resort of Gamasa, which stretches 7.5 kilometres along the Mediterranean coast. Gamasa is known for its clear water, soft sand and high iodine content. This coastal perspective complements the meeting of the Nile and Mediterranean that defines Ras El-Bar at Al-Lisan.

History and religious heritage are also among the themes of the wider destination of Ad-Daqahliyya. In Mansura, the museum’s archaeological section includes Dar Ibn Luqman, a building dating from 1218 that overlooks the Nile and where Louis IX was held prisoner. In the village of Dimianna in Markaz Bilqās, the Monastery of Saint Dimianna includes five churches, among them an archaeological church in the Gothic style. These examples add historical and architectural interests to the coastal attractions if you plan to explore beyond Ras El-Bar.
