Local orientation at Bahr Abu al-Mir
At the municipal level, a report published in January 2022 names four bridges built across the Bahr Abu al-Mir watercourse: “al-Nisf,” “al-Alu,” “al-Qabali 2” and “al-Chams.” Their cost was more than 10 million Egyptian pounds. They serve residents and agricultural land on both sides of the watercourse. If the bridges’ current condition matters for your plans, confirm it locally before travelling.
Nature in the wider destination of Al-Fayyum
The large Wadi El-Rayan protected area lies in Al-Fayyum Governorate and encompasses desert, lakes and an oasis. Located west of Fayum, it includes two lakes, sulphur springs, two mountains and golden sand dunes. It is also home to Egypt’s only waterfalls, one reason visitors come to the protected area. Wadi al-Rayan is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Magic Lake lies within the protected area, and the surrounding sand dunes are suitable for sandboarding. The waterscape and a specific activity in the dunes thus offer distinct ways to experience nature.
Another natural highlight of Al-Fayyum is Lake Qarun. The lake is home to nearly half of Egypt’s several hundred bird species, including flamingos and white pelicans. For trip planning, this offers a different focus from Wadi El-Rayan: there, the landscape is defined by desert, lakes, waterfalls and dunes; at Lake Qarun, by birdlife.
Culture, archaeology and crafts in Al-Fayyum
The collection at the two-storey Kom Aushim Museum spans the Predynastic period through the Coptic and Islamic eras. The museum also explains the everyday lives of Al-Fayyum’s inhabitants at the time. This perspective on life in different eras complements the region’s archaeological sites and monuments.
By Lake Qarun, Qasr al Sagha Temple is one of the archaeological sites. The Pyramid of El Lahun, attributed to Senusret II, is among the monuments of the Middle Kingdom highlighted in Al-Fayyum. Those considering cultural attractions will find different points of interest here: the museum’s broad historical scope, archaeological sites by the lake and a monument from the Middle Kingdom.
Tunis Village is a pottery centre in Al-Fayyum, where visitors can discover traditional art and pottery. A path also leads from Tunis Village through fields to Lake Qarun. Regional cuisine offers another focus: in Al-Fayyum, visitors can enjoy traditional Egyptian dishes from the rural cuisine. This makes it possible to include culture and food as distinct interests in trip planning, alongside nature and history.
