Jijel offers two distinct starting points for planning your trip: the archaeological site of Rabta, with its Punic rock-cut tombs, and several beach names that appear in a historical list. This lets you decide whether to focus your stay mainly on cultural history or also include the coast as a travel theme. When choosing a holiday rental, it is worth first deciding what you would like to focus on, then planning specific excursions.

Cultural History and Beach Names in Jijel

Rabta, an archaeological site with Punic tombs carved into the rock, is located in Jijel. A ministerial decree dated 14 July 2007 added Rabta to the national inventory of cultural properties. The site therefore offers a concrete cultural-history theme for your trip: you can explore the area’s early history and note Rabta as a special point of interest during your stay.

The names Kotama, Terre rouge, Crique and Ouled Bounar are also part of the local travel picture. A list of beaches authorized for swimming, dated 28 December 2014, lists all four under Jijel. The date matters when planning a day at the beach: check in advance which beaches are currently authorized for swimming. The list also shows that exploring Jijel need not be limited to its culture; you can include beaches in your personal travel plans as well.

Rabta and the four beach names point to different interests, without requiring you to follow a set order for your days.

Nature Experiences in Jijel Province

Beyond Jijel itself, Jijel Province offers a broader natural setting. Taza National Park is part of UNESCO’s World Network of Biosphere Reserves and encompasses marine and terrestrial ecosystems with several legally protected plant species. Covering 3,807 hectares, the park lies in the Little Kabylie of the Babors, west of the Wilaya of Jijel, and opens onto the Mediterranean. If you want to give nature and scenery greater emphasis when planning your trip, this offers a very different focus from the archaeological site of Rabta.

The coastline of Jijel Province is also distinctive: rocky cliffs known as the Jijel Corniche line the coast between Ziama and El-Aouana. Another destination in the province is the Grotte Merveilleuse, between El Aouana and Ziama Mansourieh, 35 kilometers west of Jijel. It was discovered in 1917 during construction of National Road No. 43. These details about its location and discovery give the site its own historical and geographical context, without requiring you to follow a specific route when planning your trip.

In Kissir, in the municipality of El Aouana, the wildlife park covers 25 hectares and is home to several mammal species as well as bird aviaries. The Erraguene Dam is a point of interest, particularly for those interested in mountain tourism and water sports. These destinations add further nature and activity themes to the picture of Jijel Province.
