Constantine tells its architectural story in very different forms: Ahmed Bey Palace, the Théâtre régional and several bridges each add their own historical and architectural accents. Those wishing to explore the city can use these landmarks as a guide while discovering different chapters of its history.

Ahmed Bey Palace: Ten Years in the Making

Construction of Ahmed Bey Palace began in 1825 and continued until 1835—a total of ten years. Covering an area of 5,600 square metres, the building is one of Constantine’s notable cultural sites. Its four open areas are the orange grove, the palm garden, the water basin and the courtyard. These named areas illustrate the variety of the complex’s layout, without requiring any one part to stand alone.

After its restoration, the palace became a museum and exhibition venue for rare historical collections. The construction period, its large area and its later function give the site several historical points of reference. For trip planning, the palace is therefore a useful starting point for anyone with a particular interest in architecture and history.

Bridges with Different Stories

The Sidi M’Cid Bridge is also known as the Suspension Bridge and was inaugurated on 19 April 1912. It rises 175 metres above the waters of the western Rhumel. This height and its relationship to the river define its architectural character. The Sidi Rached Bridge is on a different scale: it opened to traffic in 1912, is 447 metres long and 10.5 metres wide. Its widest arch has a diameter of 70 metres.

The El-Kantara Bridge also brings together several historical dates. Salah Bey built it in 1792 on the ruins of a Roman bridge; it was rebuilt by the French in 1860. It is considered the oldest bridge in the city of Constantine. Together, the three structures illustrate different aspects of the history of the city’s bridges: the name of the suspension bridge, the dimensions of the Sidi Rached Bridge, and the earlier construction and rebuilding history of the El-Kantara Bridge. Those exploring Constantine through its architecture can use these differences as a thread for their own exploration of the city.

Theatre Architecture at the Théâtre régional

The building housing the Théâtre régional de Constantine was constructed between 1877 and 1883 to a design by architect Paul Gon. The rectangular building covers 1,568 square metres and is designed in the Italian style. Boxes and galleries are among its features, and the auditorium can seat up to 600 spectators. The theatre thus adds another example of Constantine’s architecture to its historic bridges and palace. Its construction period and Italian opera style give the city’s history a different focus from that of the bridges.

More Cultural Sites in the Broader Constantine Destination

Other sites are listed as cultural heritage within the broader Constantine destination: Palais Ahmed Bey as medieval cultural heritage, Pont Romain d’Antonin and Aqueduc Romain as ancient cultural heritage, and the Théâtre régional de Constantine as classified cultural heritage. The Vieille ville de Constantine is designated a protected medieval historic sector. The Gorges du Rhummel are classified as a natural monument. These designations offer a view beyond individual buildings to the destination’s diverse cultural and natural heritage.

One tourist route in Constantine leads from the city centre to the Cirta Museum to discover Roman and Phoenician antiquities. Another tourist route also passes, among other places, over the Mellah Slimane Bridge. When deciding what to visit, you can consider whether you would like to focus your stay more on bridges and buildings, cultural history or the route to the museum. These interests provide practical guidance when choosing a holiday apartment in Constantine, without limiting your stay to just one aspect of the city.
