In Mbarara District, nature experiences and Ankole cultural heritage offer two very different reasons to explore the area. Rwenjeru Community Campsite is known for its savanna plains, walking safaris and views of the Kaburangire ridges. Cultural sites such as the Igongo Cultural Centre and the Itaaba Cultural Site draw attention to the Ankole region and its history. For families who want to combine nature and culture in one trip, this selection is a helpful starting point: when choosing a holiday rental, you can first decide which focus should shape your stay.

Savanna Landscapes and Walking Safaris

Lake Mburo National Park lies mostly in Kiruhura District; a small part of its area is in Biharwe Sub County of Mbarara District. Rwenjeru Community Campsite is located at the edge of the park, in Kabucebebe village, Biharwe Sub County. The 83-hectare site sits on a hill surrounded by flat plains. Acacia stands dot the savanna plains. From the campsite, you can see the Kaburangire ridges above Biharwe trading centre.

The campsite offers walking safaris. The plains are home to various bird species and a beehive; large game from neighbouring Lake Mburo National Park occasionally makes its way there. This place therefore brings together open savanna terrain, an activity on offer and the occasional movement of large game from the park. If nature and outdoor activities are to shape your stay, you can take these interests into account when choosing the location of your holiday rental.

Rwenjeru Community Campsite is about 2.5 km from the Mbarara–Masaka road, with Biharwe trading centre as a reference point. Karibeita Shrine is in Katerananga village, Biharwe Sub County, to the right of Biharwe trading centre and about 1 km from the Mbarara–Masaka road. Such specific location details help you find your way between the district’s different points of interest.

Ankole Culture and Historic Sites

In Biharwe trading centre in Mbarara District, Igongo Cultural Centre includes a restaurant, gardens and sculptures. The sculptures symbolise the biological and cultural diversity of the Ankole region. Designed outdoor spaces and cultural interpretation are brought together here.

Itaaba Cultural Site offers another connection between landscape and history. It lies on a hill in Kyabanyoro village, Rugando Sub County, and covers about one acre. From there, you can see Kamukuzi, the former palace of the King of Ankole, the Omugabe. Itaaba Cultural Site is considered the heart of the Ankole Kingdom. It is approximately 50 km from Kamukuzi and 40 km from the Mbarara–Ntungamo road.

In Kamukuzi, Ankole Kingdom Headquarters and Palace includes the Omugabe’s former official palace, the former Lukiiko and the Mbaguta Monument. In Nkokonjeru, the Ankole Kingdom Burial Grounds are home to the graves of members of the royal family, including Omugabe Sir Charles Gasyonga. These places offer different points of interest: Itaaba Cultural Site combines its cultural significance with views of Kamukuzi, while the sites in Kamukuzi and Nkokonjeru speak to palace history and royal burial grounds. If you are especially interested in the Ankole Kingdom, you can weigh these themes against nature experiences when deciding the focus of your trip.

A Wider Look at the Western Region

Looking beyond Mbarara District to the Western Region reveals a different natural highlight at Semuliki National Park: it covers more than 220 square kilometres and is considered East Africa’s only lowland rainforest. The park is home to the Sempaya Hot Springs, locally known as “the male” and “the female”; their water bubbles up and features striking mineral deposits. The history of the protected area is also notable: Semuliki Forest Reserve was established in 1932 and gained national park status in 1993. The savanna plains at Rwenjeru and the rainforest and hot springs elsewhere in the Western Region represent different natural themes that you can weigh against each other when planning a broader trip.
