In Mercedes, the riverside setting at Puerto de Mercedes, important green spaces, and a diverse museum scene come together. The themes range from the history of the Baron and Viscount of Mauá to miniature scenes depicting Western music and collections on the history of Soriano. The city thus offers a variety of starting points for planning a trip around your own interests.

By the Río Negro and Among Green Spaces

Puerto de Mercedes lies on the banks of the Río Negro. A listed catamaran route runs from Mercedes to Isla Barrientos and includes going ashore and hiking. If you plan to include the route in your trip, check the current schedule in advance.

The green spaces also have their own distinct character. Parque Guernica is one of the most important green spaces in Mercedes. Espacio Memoria Soriano is a park with paths named after the ten people from Soriano who disappeared during the dictatorship. The grounds also include various tree species, benches, and bicycle racks. While Parque Guernica represents the city's green spaces, the paths at Espacio Memoria Soriano are connected to a specific act of remembrance.

Museums, Remembrance, and Architecture

Castillo Mauá is considered one of the city's greatest attractions and one of the most important testimonies to the business activities of the Baron and Viscount of Mauá in Uruguay. The Museo Paleontológico Alejandro Berro is located on the ground floor. The building thus brings together historical associations and paleontology.

The Centro Histórico y Geográfico de Soriano is housed in a former convent; its building is an example of eclectic architecture. The exhibitions include antique weapons, musical instruments, and national numismatic objects. There are also objects related to gaucho culture, lithic material of Indigenous origin, original documents belonging to President Idiarte Borda, and an extensive collection of gold and silver stirrups. These displays offer a range of ways to explore history, culture, and everyday objects.

The Museo de la Música en Miniatura tells the story of Western music through 36 three-dimensional scenes. Casa Puerta complements these cultural sites with a wide variety of objects made from materials including wool, leather, wood, and ceramics. All the objects on display there are for sale; if you would like to purchase a particular item, check its current availability before buying.

A modern sculpture ensemble commemorating Juan Antonio Lavalleja stands in Plaza Lavalleja. Together with the former convent and the diverse collections, this site shows the variety of cultural points of interest in Mercedes.

Views at Calera Real del Dacá

The archaeological complex of Calera Real del Dacá sits on a small rise and offers views of the stream and its gallery forest. The landscape views complement themes more closely associated with buildings, exhibitions, and urban history with an archaeological site in the open air.

When choosing a holiday rental in Mercedes, your preferred focus for the trip can help guide you: Would you like to include a river route, set aside time for green spaces, or spend more time exploring cultural sites?
