Rocha has both an urban and a scenic side. In the historic centre, Teatro 25 de Mayo stands opposite Plaza Independencia; the Sierras de Rocha are close to the city. This offers two distinct interests to consider when planning your holiday: culture in the city and nature in the nearby hills.

Hills and natural pools

The Sierras de Rocha are a hilly landscape of rocky slopes, deep ravines, and valleys crossed by small streams. For nature lovers, these hills are a destination in their own right, close to the city.

In the rocky areas, streams, channels, and waterfalls form small natural pools. You can cool off there after a hike. The landscape thus offers a specific water-based experience to include in the nature-focused part of your stay.

Activities in the Sierras

The Sierras offer a range of horseback rides and tours. Depending on the option, they last from a few hours to several days. This range is useful when planning your trip: you can decide whether to include a shorter activity or a multi-day outing.

The Sierras are also home to the first cross-country mountain biking competition course in the Departamento de Rocha. It is 5.8 kilometres long and equipped for the sport. If you plan to use the course, check its condition beforehand.

Culture in the historic centre

Teatro 25 de Mayo is in the historic centre of Rocha, opposite Plaza Independencia. The theatre is therefore a clearly located cultural attraction for the urban part of your trip. Together with activities in the nearby Sierras, it offers a different focus for planning your holiday.

Nature and history in the wider Rocha destination

Another natural highlight in the wider Rocha destination is the protected landscape of Laguna de Rocha. It covers around 22,000 hectares, including 7,200 hectares of water. The area includes hills, plains, the coastal strip, and part of the oceanic platform.

Laguna de Rocha is a habitat and refuge for threatened birds. It is home to more than 220 bird species, including resident and migratory birds; the species count may change as further observations are made.

Another regional cultural attraction is in Castillos: the Complejo Cultural 2 de Mayo was founded there on 16 August 1891 as the Sociedad Española de Socorros Mutuos “2 de Mayo” de San Vicente de Castillos.

When looking for a holiday rental, choosing the area is a useful first step: would you like to focus on the city of Rocha, its theatre, and the nearby Sierras, or would you also like to consider Laguna de Rocha and Castillos as part of the wider destination?
