Florida in Uruguay: Art, Nature and Special Discoveries
Accommodation in Florida
The Department of Florida in Uruguay offers a wide variety of reasons to visit: murals on house facades, distinctive buildings, nature and guided activities. When looking for a holiday rental, first consider which experiences you want to shape your trip. Art and architecture, landscapes or activities that need to be arranged in advance may play different roles in your choice of location.
Art, Buildings and Tradition
In 2010, an art project began in 25 de Agosto, with more than 70 murals painted on the facades of more than 40 houses. The many works on different facades offer a distinctive way to experience art in the town, unlike viewing a single building. In the city of Florida, the Catedral Basílica, Santuario Nacional Virgen de los Treinta y Tres, has a bronze door designed by José Belloni and his son Stelio.
Alejandro Gallinal is also worth a visit for an architectural detail: the Complejo Arquitectónico el Carrillón includes a carillon. Its bells are arranged according to a musical scale and can be played by hand or via a keyboard. The religious festival of Capilla San Cono takes place every year on June 3 and includes a large procession. If you want to plan your trip around this date, check the current events calendar.
Plant Diversity, Ravine and Lake
Prado Piedra Alta is a recreational area with a wide variety of native and exotic plant species. A different kind of landscape can be found at Capilla Fenocchi: it is 3 km from Villa Cardal, at the edge of a ravine with a stream running along its bottom. Nature here ranges from diverse plant life to a setting shaped by a ravine and water.
A 2023 tourism description mentions guided walks at Parque turístico La India – Somos Naturaleza in La Macana, where visitors receive information about the local flora and fauna from guides and interpreters. The park is just over 3 km from the departmental capital. Before visiting, check whether the walks and arrangements described are currently available. Centro Recreativo Paso Severino, meanwhile, lies on the shore of the lake formed by the dam on the Río Santa Lucía Chico.
Guided Activities and Visits by Arrangement
In Fray Marcos, Senderos de Aquino offers guided walks on land and water; visits must be arranged in advance. If you want to include this activity in your plans, also check its current availability. Centro Cultural Casa de la Azotea in Capilla del Sauce can be visited by prior arrangement.
According to a 2022 tourism description, Establecimiento La Oportunidad in Cardal invited visitors to learn about the establishment and its work processes. Check current visiting options before your trip. The opening of the Parador “La Isla” in 25 de Mayo was announced for July 6, 2025; the venue was intended for the enjoyment of residents and visitors. If you are interested in it today, ask about access arrangements in advance.
Which Experiences Do You Want to Shape Your Trip?
The examples span different places and themes: architecture and murals sit alongside nature, religious tradition and guided activities. A 2019 tourism guide to the Department of Florida also described the Ruta de los Caudillos, Matreros y el Tren as a route connecting Casupá and Fray Marcos; at the time, it was still being developed. These varied attractions can help you focus your holiday rental search on the experiences that matter most to you. If a visit explicitly needs to be arranged in advance, factor this requirement directly into your plans.
