Purificacion: City Parks, Churches and Festivals
Accommodation in Purificacion
Purificación can be explored through a range of themes: the centrally located Parque Santander, the Malecón on the banks of the Río Magdalena, religious sites and folk events. If you’re looking for a holiday rental, consider what matters most to you: are you particularly interested in the urban setting, the river or cultural events? The places and traditions each give Purificación a different character.
City Park, Riverside and Recreation Park
Parque Santander is one of the city parks in the centre of Purificación. The Malecón, by contrast, is on the banks of the Río Magdalena. A centrally located park and a riverside promenade thus offer two different ways to experience the area. If you want to focus your trip on one of these aspects, you can make it a particular feature of your stay.
Parque Yaporox reveals another side of the town and is also known as Parque Recreacional de Purificación. It opened in 2000. Parque Yaporox is a recreation park in Purificación.
Religious Sites and Festivals
Santuario Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria is dedicated to the Virgen de la Candelaria. In Purificación, Iglesia Nuestra Señora del Carmen is regarded as a historic, cultural and religious site of great importance to the community. The main celebrations at the church take place on 16 July. They include the sale of religious items, the blessing of vehicles and children, open-air celebrations, processions and fireworks. The dedication of the Santuario and the festivities at Iglesia del Carmen thus represent different religious connections in the town.
Folk events also bring their own character. The Fiestas folclóricas de Purificación take place at the end of the year and are considered a tradition more than 50 years old. The Festival Folclórico del Sur Oriente del Tolima features cultural performances in the streets and squares of Purificación. The festival calendar thus brings together religious celebrations on 16 July, the year-end Fiestas and folk performances in public spaces.
Another event with a specific date took place on 30 November 2024: the closing programme of the Festival de Aves del Tolima at the Malecón Turístico included academic activities, cultural performances and activities promoting the protection of biodiversity. This event connects the riverside location with cultural and nature-related themes.
Local Products and Choosing Your Holiday Rental
Lechona is one of Purificación’s local products. If you’re interested in regional cuisine, it offers a specific culinary point of reference alongside the town’s religious and folk experiences.
When looking for a holiday rental, you can first consider what you want your trip to focus on: the central urban area around Parque Santander, the riverside setting of the Malecón, or the cultural sites and festival days. If you like planning around a particular date, you can use the celebrations on 16 July and the year-end Fiestas as two different points of reference.
