El Socorro’s history is reflected in specific places: the Capuchin monastery on Calle Real, the Capitolio on Calle 16, an old villa with a cultural center, and squares whose locations can be identified by the churches opposite them. This variety makes the town’s historic character tangible without reducing it to a single building. For planning your trip, this offers a clear range of themes to explore: sacred architecture, political memory, historic houses, or public squares. If you are looking for a vacation rental, the location details can help you match your preferred area with the themes you would like to focus on during your stay.

Monastery and Political History

In the upper part of El Socorro, the Convento de los Capuchinos San Juan Bautista stands beside the Capilla de Santa Bárbara on the historic Calle Real. Construction began in 1787 and was completed in 1795. It is considered one of the first Capuchin monasteries built in the Americas. This combines a precisely dated building history with significance that extends beyond the local perspective. Its location beside the chapel also gives you a precise point of reference within the town, while historic Calle Real further anchors the monastery on an old street. Visitors particularly interested in religious history will find a specific point of interest here, distinct from the political history commemorated elsewhere.

Houses and Historical Connections

The Capitolio del Estado is located on Calle 16 in the historic center of El Socorro. It recalls the important political role the municipality played in the 19th century. This perspective complements the monastery with a different chapter: here, the focus is on the municipality’s political significance rather than the building’s construction and religious history. The Casa de la Cultura Horacio Rodríguez Plata, in turn, introduces a different kind of building. It is housed in an old villa built in the late 18th century, at Calle 14 No. 12-35 and a few meters from Parque de la Independencia. In 1971, it was declared a National Monument by Decree 1771. The building’s age, address, and heritage designation give this place its own distinct historical character.

The historic center also offers different points of reference for architectural history. The Casa de la Logia Masónica is located in the former Triángulo Masón and near the remains of the Capitolio del Estado Soberano de Santander. The Casa de Berbeo is opposite the main park and close to the Catedral de Nuestra Señora del Socorro. It is also one of the municipality’s oldest colonial houses. Together, these sites—a monastery, a building commemorating political history, a cultural center, and old houses—represent different facets of the town’s history.

Parks and Navigation

The parks, too, can be identified by what stands opposite them. Parque Antonia Santos Plata is also known as Parque La Chiquinquirá and is opposite the Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de Chiquinquirá. Parque de la Independencia is in the heart of the historic center, opposite the Basílica Menor de Nuestra Señora del Socorro. The two parks can be distinguished by the names of the religious buildings opposite them: Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de Chiquinquirá at Parque La Chiquinquirá, and Basílica Menor de Nuestra Señora del Socorro at Parque de la Independencia.

Market and Choosing a Location

Plaza de Mercado de El Socorro offers another way to navigate by street location. It is in the San Victorino sector, between Carreras 16 and 17 and Calles 12 and 13, in the town center. This location description complements the landmarks defined by churches and buildings with a city block. Choose a vacation rental based on which of these areas interests you most.
