Curiti has more than one reason to take a closer look: the Sendero del Fique combines a craft perspective with a distinctive trail, while the church on the main square anchors history in the townscape. Nearby, caves and the Balneario de Pescaderito complement the cultural themes with other excursion ideas. This gives you the choice between exploring the town and visiting natural attractions in the surrounding area.

Fique on the Sendero del Fique

The Sendero del Fique is 436 meters long, paved with hewn stone, and located to the right of the Curití stream; it is one block of houses away from the main square. The trail is intended to promote regional fique products as well as cultural and craft presentations. There is an exhibition about the production and manufacturing process of fique along the trail. This brings not only the material itself but also how it is processed into focus.

In the Department of Santander, fique has been passed down through generations for a long time. The exhibition along the trail in Curití and this regional tradition shed light on the same craft at two different scales: the manufacturing process on the local trail and the practice passed down through generations in the department.

A historic landmark on the main square

The Iglesia San Joaquín de Curití was built in 1640 and is located on the town’s main square. Together with the Sendero del Fique, it offers two distinct cultural points of interest: here stands the historic church, while the trail focuses on fique and its production. Visitors interested in architectural history and crafts will find two clearly different themes in the town.

Caves in the nearby area

Cueva de El Carmen is in Vereda La Ceiba, about a 15-minute walk from the town. The cave is approximately 400 meters long; above a hollow are natural, mask-like formations. Here, an approximate walking time, a size estimate and a striking natural feature come together.

Cueva de la Vaca is considered a destination for caving and is about five minutes from the town center. Cueva del Yeso lies between the veredas of Quebradaseca and El Placer, around 15 kilometers from the center of Curiti. The details provide different points of reference: for El Carmen, a walking time is given; for Cueva de la Vaca, a time from the town center; and for Cueva del Yeso, an approximate distance in kilometers along with its location between veredas.

Waterfalls and pools at Pescaderito

The Balneario de Pescaderito is located in the nearby area of Curiti. It is described as having two waterfalls and around eight pools of varying character. The pools mentioned include Pozos del Amor, Clavellinas, El Tambor and La Zamba. Camping and preparing sancocho or a barbecue are also listed as activities associated with the balneario.

Compared with the caves, Pescaderito offers a different focus: waterfalls and pools shape the natural side of the experience, while camping and preparing food are additional activities. This lets you weigh water-based destinations against caving as different excursion interests.

Choose a vacation rental to suit your travel plans

When looking for a vacation rental, a practical question arises: would you prefer your stay to be closer to the town center, with the Sendero and main square, or would you rather prioritize destinations in the surrounding area? Plan around that priority and check the location of a specific listing in relation to the excursions you want to take. If you are traveling with children, it may help to plan exploring the town and trips to the surrounding area as different types of day out.
