Casablanca: Nature, History and Motorsport
Accommodation in Casablanca
A five-kilometre circular trail exploring Muisca history, a 60-hectare nature reserve, and museums dedicated to aircraft and motorcycles each offer a different theme.
Nature, biodiversity and Muisca history
The Reserva Natural Ecoparque Sabana is located on the grounds of the Fundación Parque Jaime Duque. It covers 60 hectares and offers activities focused on the preservation of life, historical memory and nature. The Sendero de la Memoria Muisca also runs through the reserve: this five-kilometre circular trail features displays about the history of Muisca culture. It thus connects a natural area with a specific historical theme.
The Humedal Jaime Duque is a wetland. Visitors can observe species including the Tingua moteada, the Pato turrio and the Monjita cabeciamarilla. An educational area for families complements this focus.
Aviation, motorcycles and colonial heritage
The Museo Aeroespacial Colombiano is dedicated to the history of the military aircraft that have protected Colombian airspace. The Museo de Motos El Reto focuses on motorcycles and was founded out of an interest in sharing their history and development in Colombia. The two museums offer different perspectives: one centres on the history of military aviation, the other on the development of the motorcycle.
The Hacienda Normandía offers another perspective on the past. Its colonial manor house is more than 150 years old and is a notable feature of the rural landscape of Vereda La Fuente. The Monumento al Ollero is based on an original drawing by the colonial-era painter Don Ramón Torres Méndez and depicts the traditional work of the area’s residents. The architecture and portrayal of traditional work thus complement the museums’ themes with a regional historical perspective.
Archaeology and historic trade routes
The Abrigo Rocoso del Valle del Abra was declared a nationally protected archaeological area in 2018 by ICANH Resolution 304. The Camino del Gone, by contrast, centres on a historic route linked to the history of the Valle del Abra. Early residents of the areas of Tocancipá, Gachancipá, Nemocón and Zipaquirá travelled this route primarily to exchange goods. Together, these themes offer insight into different aspects of the past: archaeological heritage and the exchange of goods between residents of the named areas.
Motorsport and cultural life
The Kartódromo Juan Pablo Montoya is located in the northwestern part of the Autódromo de Tocancipá. It opened in December 2002 in honour of Colombian racing driver Juan Pablo Montoya. The Festival de la Colombianidad was created as a way to introduce the community of Tocancipá and visitors to the community’s cultural, musical and recreational activities. Together, these examples illustrate two more facets: the history of a motorsport venue and the community’s involvement in culture, music and recreation.
