Guarinocito can be explored through two very different themes: the Charca de Guarinocito as a wetland system and the Estación del Ferrocarril Guarinocito as designated tangible cultural heritage. The waterscape offers a natural history perspective, while the station provides a specific cultural point of reference. As you plan your trip, you can consider these interests separately and decide which focus matters most for your stay.

The Charca: several bodies of water and a distinctive shape

The Charca de Guarinocito wetland system lies on the left bank of the Río Magdalena. It includes the Cascabel and Las Burras streams, as well as several bodies of water: La Charca, La Esmeralda, La Caimanera and La Rica. The system therefore comprises both streams and individually named bodies of water.

The Charca is considered a horseshoe-shaped wetland and measures approximately 3 km in length; at its widest point, it is 250 m wide. Its approximate length is therefore around twelve times its greatest width. This comparison gives an impression of its elongated shape without losing sight of its horseshoe form.

The Charca de Guarinocito is also designated as a DMI. A 2025 description lists more than 25 fish species in the waters and surrounding area, including bocachicos, bagres and nicuros. The tití gris and the mono nocturno also live in and around the Charca. These two mammals add another animal group to the fish fauna.

The shape and measurements help place the Charca in its geographical context; the fish and mammals mentioned draw attention to its wildlife. These are two different perspectives on the same wetland: one focusing on its form and components, the other on the species that live there.

Designated railway heritage

The Estación del Ferrocarril Guarinocito is designated as immovable tangible cultural heritage and is located in the Corregimiento Guarinocito. Thus, alongside the wetland system, there is a single, specifically named station as a cultural point of reference. The Charca is described in terms of several bodies of water and streams, while the railway heritage is centred on this station. When exploring Guarinocito, you can therefore consider the landscape and cultural perspectives as distinct areas of interest.

How these themes can guide your accommodation search

When choosing a holiday rental in Guarinocito, it helps to decide which themes matter most for your trip. Are you primarily interested in the wetland landscape and wildlife, or would you also like to include the Estación del Ferrocarril in your plans alongside the Charca? You don't have to give both perspectives equal weight: nature and cultural heritage can provide different points of focus. This way, you can match your choice of location to the kind of trip you want in Guarinocito.
