Santa Rosa de Viterbo brings together a connection to a cultural route, sculptures, historical accounts and community traditions. The town is part of the Ruta Libertadora “Boyacá Bicentenario,” a cultural tourism route. The municipality also includes a regional natural area, and paragliding is listed as an activity there. Travel themes thus range from memorial sites in the town to connections spanning several municipalities.

Gardens, Sculptures and Memorial Sites

Parque Principal Santa Rosa de Viterbo is characterised by large gardens bordered by living pine hedges. A 2015 tourism description also highlights sculptures honouring General Rafael Reyes, Palomo Blanco and the meteorite replica of Santa Rosa de Viterbo. The gardens and hedges give the square a landscaped structure; the commemorative motifs connect it with different people and local stories. The park thus brings together several specific themes of collective memory.

Historical Connections and Community Traditions

The replica of the horse Palomo was a gift from Casilda Zafra, a farmer from the municipality of Santa Rosa de Viterbo. The gift was made shortly after the passage of the patriot army from the Venezuelan Llanos across the Páramo de Pisba in 1819. The meteorite of Santa Rosa de Viterbo has its own historical connection: it was found in 1810 on Tocavita hill near the town. A sculpture in Parque Principal commemorates the meteorite replica; Tocavita, by contrast, is where the meteorite was found. The dates refer to different events—the meteorite discovery and the story of Palomo.

A 2015 tourism description mentions the pilgrimage to Nuestro Señor de la Salud, the municipality’s patron saint, on the third Saturday of each month. It is organised by the town’s neighbourhoods and rural settlements. If you would like to plan your trip around this schedule, confirm the date in advance.

The municipality’s patron saint festivities traditionally take place in mid-September and include horse and livestock shows. The Reinado del Campo Boyacense is also singled out as particularly significant. If you would like to plan your stay around one of these events, check the dates for the specific year you will be travelling.

Natural Landscape and Travel Planning

Las Cruces Lagoon is part of Parque Natural Regional Pan de Azúcar. The regional park is located in Páramo El Consuelo and extends across the municipalities of Santa Rosa de Viterbo, Cerinza, Belén and Tutazá. This makes the natural park part of a cross-municipal landscape, while Parque Principal, with its gardens and commemorative motifs, is a distinct point of interest in the town.

A tourism website lists paragliding as an activity in the municipality. If you would like to include it in your travel plans, check in advance whether it will be available during your trip.

When looking for a holiday rental, you can start by deciding what you want to focus on. For local history and memorials, the park, the story of Palomo and the meteorite discovery are key; if you want to take traditional events into account, plan around the pilgrimage or patron saint festivities instead. The lagoon and paragliding offer other points of interest: the natural landscape and an activity, respectively.
