Concón between dunes, birdlife and the coast
Accommodation in Concón
Concón brings together a striking coastal landscape, wetlands, birdlife and a cultural glimpse into the region’s history. The dunes, Roca Oceánica and Humedal Desembocadura Río Aconcagua appeal to different interests: geological formations, coastal views or nature watching. There is also the Museo Histórico y Arqueológico de Concón. When planning a holiday rental, it helps to first consider which of these aspects you would like to make the focus of your stay.
Dunes as a defining feature of the coastal landscape
Campo Dunar de Concón is a dune system with unique geological and geomorphological features and an important element of central Chile’s coastal landscape. The sands were deposited by the wind; wind, sand availability, topography and vegetation all played a part in their formation. The landscape can therefore be seen not just as a coastal backdrop, but also as the result of various natural factors.
The Dunas de Concón, also known as Campo Dunar, were declared a Santuario de la Naturaleza. The names refer to the same dune system, while the declaration highlights another aspect of the site: alongside its geological and geomorphological significance, its designated protected status is also part of the landscape. For travellers interested in nature and coastal formations, this offers a different focus from a traditional beach day.
Coastal views and native flora
Roca Oceánica is a natural viewpoint in Concón overlooking the bay. Visitors can enjoy the sunset there and stroll among native coastal plants. This brings two different experiences together in one place: views across the bay and a walk where coastal plants are part of the experience. If you would rather focus on scenery and nature than culture during your trip, this combination is a useful guide.
Wetlands and birdlife
Humedal Desembocadura Río Aconcagua is located in Concón and was designated an urban wetland by the Ministry of the Environment in March 2022. It is one of the most important nature reserves in the Valparaíso Region and one of its most significant bird reserves. Resident species include seven-coloured tanagers, coots, black oystercatchers, great grebes and herons. Migratory species mentioned include black-necked stilts, Baird’s sandpipers and curlews. Both resident and migratory species are therefore part of the birdlife described here.
Another nature-focused destination is Parque Ecológico La Isla. It is home to a rich diversity of plants and birds, and part of the path through the park runs through an urban wetland. The two places offer different highlights: at Humedal Desembocadura Río Aconcagua, the emphasis is on its importance as a bird reserve and the resident and migratory species mentioned. La Isla offers a connection with plants and birds, as well as a path through a wetland.
Cultural history at Casa Agustina
Museo Histórico y Arqueológico de Concón is located in Casa Agustina, a building dating from 1927, and promotes the cultural heritage of Concón and the region. Its collections are connected with the Indigenous Bato, Llolleo and Aconcagua cultures. The building itself thus connects with several cultural histories, while the museum’s exhibits complement the nature-focused attractions with a distinct perspective on the region’s heritage.
Water sports and coastal walks
The coastal waters near Playa Concón offer opportunities for several water sports from the shore. A 2020 tourism description mentions surf schools in the La Boca sector that rent out complete equipment, including boards and wetsuits, and offer surfing and bodyboarding lessons for all age groups. Check with the individual schools in advance for their current offerings.
An outing along the coast lets you explore different parts of Concón and continue to other seaside destinations in the Valparaíso Region, such as Playa Cochoa, Playa Negra and Reñaca. A 2020 tourism description also outlines a walk starting at Caleta Higuerilla and in Higuerillas Alto, in the La Boca sector. Along the way are places with sea views, old façades, hidden houses, terraces and viewpoints. If you would like to take this walk as a current offering, check in advance whether it is currently available.
Which holiday rental suits your travel plans?
Concón offers several distinct starting points for planning your trip: dunes and wetlands, coastal views, water sports, walks and culture. First decide which of these experiences matter most to you during your stay. That way, you can make your choice based on your own plans rather than on a single idea of the destination.
