Colchane brings together the landscapes of the Andean Altiplano and vibrant Aymara culture. The town is located right on the border with Bolivia and is classified as a tourist folklore attraction of international importance: its popular, spontaneously developed architecture is categorized as architecture in the form of a town. Travelers seeking cultural encounters and high-altitude Andean nature will find a different focus here from a stay devoted to just one activity.

Aymara Traditions and Textile Art

In Colchane, you can discover Aymara textile art and hear from the women who practice this technique, passed down from generation to generation, about the tradition. The craftswomen have received the Sello de Excelencia. They include María Choque Mamani, from the town of Colchane in the municipality of Colchane. She is an Aymara camelid herder and textile artisan who preserves the high-altitude Andean camelid-raising system.

Her cultural work also includes rituals associated with textile art: Inkuña, vistalla, and aguayo. María Choque Mamani shares this knowledge as a teacher and traditional instructor at various vocational institutes and takes part in cultural congresses and seminars focused on preserving the culture. These insights make Colchane especially interesting if you want to discover not only landscapes on your trip, but also traditional knowledge and crafts.

Another cultural connection to the region is the preparation of the soil for sowing quinoa. This Aymara custom takes place in September, when the Pachamama is asked for permission to sow. It is observed in all Aymara settlements in the municipality of Colchane. Agriculture also shapes the town: Colchane accounts for 90 percent of Chile’s total area planted with quinoa. Tradition and agriculture are therefore part of a distinct local history here.

Altiplano, Trails, and Nature Nearby

The Parque Nacional Volcán Isluga is nearby. Its high-altitude Andean ecosystem is home to a diverse array of wildlife, including vicuñas, suri, and three species of flamingo, all of which are protected. The park combines this natural environment with Aymara cultural heritage. The trails listed there vary considerably in terms of planning your day: the Sendero de la laguna de Arabilla is 1.5 kilometers long, rated easy, and has a stated total duration of one hour. The Sendero del volcán Isluga is 6 kilometers long, rated challenging, and has a stated total duration of nine hours; it is also rated challenging in winter.

The Termas de Enquelga are also located in Parque Nacional Volcán Isluga, at an altitude of 3,900 meters. Warm thermal springs emerge there and form natural pools of crystal-clear water. Another striking landscape can be found at the Bosque de Cactus Gigantes de Ancovinto, in the border area of Colchane, on the slopes of the Ancovinto hills. The giant cacti grow up to 10 meters tall.

Getting There and Finding Your Way During Your Stay

Several national and international bus companies stop in Colchane on the route from Iquique to Oruro, including the Chile–Bolivia connection. When driving from Iquique or Alto Hospicio, the route described follows the A-16 and then Route 5 north to Huara; there, the road branches off toward the municipality of Colchane.

Colchane is considered a central point on a tourist circuit of great social importance. If you are looking for a vacation rental, the cultural experiences in town or the nature activities nearby can shape the focus of your trip. Other destinations at the same level include Pozo Almonte, Pica, Huara, and La Tirana.
