Chonchi combines a distinctive townscape of wooden architecture with a layered urban layout. The historic Calle Centenario runs from the upper church area past the port to the waterfront. By the water, the Mercado Municipal makes its own mark with two buildings, a palafitic plaza and a lookout point. Those who want to focus their trip on culture, urban discoveries and regional produce will find different sides of the town here.

Church and Calle Centenario

The Iglesia Nuestra Señora del Rosario is in the centre of Chonchi, at Francisco Coral 297. The present building dates from 1893 and is an example of the Chiloé school of wooden architecture. The church is a tangible starting point for exploring a regional architectural style. Traditional patron saint celebrations and Catholic festivities are associated with it: Nuestra Señora del Rosario on 7 October, San Carlos Borromeo on 4 November, and San Pedro and San Pablo on 29 June. These dates give each celebration a specific day; they also point to the different saints and occasions that are part of the local church culture.

Calle Centenario connects Chonchi’s three urban levels, descending from the upper church area to the port and waterfront. As a historic street, it is part of the Zona Típica de la Calle Centenario. It is therefore not only a link between different parts of town, but also a distinct part of the historic townscape. As you explore Chonchi, you can focus on the street, the church and the town’s different levels, rather than getting to know the place through a single building alone.

Discover Music and Culture

The Museo del Acordeón displays around 100 accordions of different types, brands and periods. Most were acquired on Chiloé. The collection offers several ways to compare the instruments: by design, brand or period. Visitors are welcomed to the museum by musician and owner Sergio Colivoro. If you are interested in music and instruments, you can make this museum visit a cultural highlight of your trip.

The Teatro Municipal de Chonchi is also part of the town’s cultural offering. It is on the ground floor of the municipal building at Calle Pedro Montt 254, opposite the square, and is used for theatre, music and dance performances. The Casa de la Cultura de Chonchi adds a space for library activities such as reading clubs and read-aloud sessions. This brings together different forms of cultural activity: performances at the theatre, library activities at the cultural centre and the instrument collection at the museum.

Market and Waterfront

The Feria Artesanal y Mercado Municipal de Chonchi is on the waterfront and has 12 stalls. Items for sale include handicrafts, textiles, handmade liqueurs, agricultural produce and fishery products. This brings together several local product categories in one market, with crafts alongside goods from agriculture and fishing. There is also a restaurant on the second floor of the Feria Artesanal y Mercado Municipal. Together with its two buildings, palafitic plaza and lookout point, the market gives the waterfront a distinctive place in Chonchi’s townscape.
