In Osorno Province, urban history and art meet experiences in a volcanic landscape. In Osorno, museums and historic wooden buildings tell different chapters of the city’s story; in the municipality of Puyehue, trails wind through wet forests, while kayaking and recreational fishing are possible on Lake Puyehue. If you’re looking for a vacation rental, your trip’s main focus can help guide your choice of location: museums and culture point to Osorno, while nature experiences point to Puyehue and its surroundings.

Urban History and Art in Osorno

The Municipal Art Gallery “Arturo Montecino” is housed in a renovated former railway station. Its collection consists primarily of works from the 1940s, including pieces by Chilean painters Camilo Mori, Israel Roa, and Roser Bru. A visit therefore offers a glimpse of a pictorial cultural heritage and a building that once served the railway.

The Municipal Historical Museum also offers several perspectives on the city’s history. It was founded on October 18, 1946, at the initiative of Victor Sánchez Aguilera, director of the Liceo de Hombres de Osorno. The exhibitions span three levels and include permanent exhibition rooms, an interactive space, and audiovisual and cultural history rooms. The Casa de la Cultura José Guadalupe Posada adds to this insight with nine themed rooms covering different periods of the city’s history, as well as historically significant objects.

The Museo Pleistocenico Osorno explores a different subject: it displays fossils dated to 15,000 years ago that were found at the Pilauco excavation site. Two rooms feature dioramas, replicas, interactive modules, and the most significant fossils excavated at the site to date. Those especially interested in science and technology can also visit the Museo Interactivo de Osorno, established in 2013 as the first and only science and technology museum in southern Chile.

Osorno’s cultural landscape also includes the well-preserved Zona Típica on Calle Mackenna, with its many wooden buildings associated with the history of German settlers; Catedral San Mateo; and Casa del Folclore, with Chilean music and dance.

Nature and Discovery in Puyehue

In Puyehue National Park, trails lead through wet forests to waterfalls and viewpoints. The Volcán Puyehue offers views of the Cordón Caulle volcanic complex. In the Antillanca sector, there are also caves formed by underground lava flows. The national park thus offers a range of nature experiences, including forest trails, waterfalls, viewpoints, and geological formations.

Kayaking and recreational fishing are possible on Lake Puyehue. Puyehue also has thermal waters that make use of the region’s intense geothermal activity. Those interested in the history of technology as well as nature and water can include the Auto Museo Moncopulli in the municipality of Puyehue; it displays well-preserved classic vehicles.
