Lakeside promenades with views of the lake, fine-sand beaches, museums and historic buildings reveal different sides of Ranco. Rivers, waterfalls, hot springs and local traditions are also among the possible highlights. If you’re planning a trip, start by asking yourself what matters most to you: nature and outdoor activities, regional history, or a glimpse of local life. You can then tailor your search for a holiday rental to the experiences you’d like to discover.

Lakeshores and landscapes

The Costanera Lago Ranco features a pedestrian promenade, renovated green spaces and unobstructed panoramic views of the lake. If you enjoy spending time by the water, it’s a convenient starting point for a walk. Bahía Coique has a different kind of beach: it has a 2-kilometre stretch of fine sand, a campsite and facilities for water sports. Playa Hueicolla is a 5-kilometre coastal beach, also with fine sand. These three places offer different experiences by the water, and the stated beach lengths give you a clear point of reference.

The landscape beyond the beaches also offers striking natural scenery. Ojos del Huishue consists of a series of waterfalls that emerge through dense vegetation along the edges of a 20-metre-high ravine and flow into Lago Huishue. Parque Nacional Puyehue includes, among other areas, the municipalities of Río Bueno and Lago Ranco. Access to its trails is free, except for the concessioned trails El Indio, Repucura and La Princesa. The wider travel area includes the ZOIT Lago Ranco-Futrono, designated as a nature tourism destination. It includes, among other features, the volcanoes Mocho Choshuenco, Puyehue, Carrán and Cordón Caulle, as well as Lakes Ranco and Maihue.

Museums and historic buildings

Museo Tringlo Lago Ranco displays ceramic pieces from excavations in the same municipality and explores the history of Lago Ranco’s first inhabitants through to the present day. Museo Arturo Moller Sandrock offers a different collection: everyday objects used by the Mapuche and from the colonial period, including essential items for defence and communication. If cultural discoveries are a priority, you can think of these museums as different ways to explore history and everyday life.

Fuerte San José de Alcudia was built between 1793 and 1795 on top of a 50-metre-high ravine above the Río Bueno. It offers wide panoramic views of the surrounding area. Iglesia Misión de Trumao was founded in the late 18th century; the wooden building was constructed by settlers of the Franciscan mission. Puente Chirre also tells the story of the region: the single-arch bridge was built in 1925 and is now used by road traffic on the Interlagos route.

Water activities and regional traditions

Puerto Trumao is a departure point for boat trips on the Río Bueno. Fly-fishing on the Río Calcurrupe is subject to clear rules: only catch-and-release fishing is allowed, using artificial lures and single barbless hooks. If you’re looking to relax rather than enjoy river activities, Termas de Chihuio has an outdoor pool complex and individual tubs carved from hollowed-out Coihue trunks. Parque Peumayen Río Bueno, in the Rucatayo Alto area of the municipality of Río Bueno, has several trails and viewpoints.

About 600 people live on Isla Huapi, most of whom are Mapuche-Huilliche. The island can be reached by ferry. Local artisans sell textiles, wood carvings and basketry. Muestra Costumbrista Isla Huapi takes place every summer weekend and features horseback rides, craft exhibitions, rural music and traditional dishes. A visit to the event brings together several glimpses of local craft traditions and culture.
