Puerto Saavedra: River Mouth, Coastal Park and Culture
Accommodation in Puerto Saavedra
Puerto Saavedra lies at the mouth of the Río Imperial, where it meets the Pacific Ocean. The landscape around Saavedra brings together rural areas, river, lake and sea; in town, there is also a coastal park, fishing activity and historical sites. This makes it possible to shape your trip around nature, culture and activity.
Coastal Park, Activities and History
Puerto Saavedra’s Parque Costanera is a 2.8-kilometer coastal park. It has children’s playgrounds, a skate park and a Ruca museum, and also offers opportunities for sports. For a trip with children, the playgrounds are a practical point of reference, while the skate park and sports facilities add an active focus. The Ruca museum complements these recreational and physical activities with a cultural connection.
The Ruinas Duhalde are located in the northern part of Parque Costanera. They survived the 1960 earthquake and tsunami. These historic traces of the disaster are part of the park’s character. The Iglesia del Sagrado Corazón de Jesús in Puerto Saavedra was built after the tsunami and is another historical landmark in town.
Views and Local Work
Puerto Saavedra’s municipal cemetery offers sweeping views of the town, the Río Imperial and its floodplains, and the Pacific coast. The vista brings together the townscape, floodplain landscape and sea in a single panorama. At Puerto Saavedra beach, you can observe the traditional work of local artisanal fishers. Together, the views and what you can observe on the beach offer two different ways to experience the area: a panorama of town, floodplains and coast, and a glimpse of local fishing activity.
Casa del Telar in Puerto Saavedra sells high-quality Mapuche products. Alongside history and fishing, Mapuche crafts are another cultural theme to explore.
